Downloading of geocaching log images

AntMadeira shared this idea 8 years ago

When using GC Offlinizer, all listing images are downloaded, but I've been noticing that images from logs are not. (only little thumbnails)

When in the field, in areas without internet connection, it would be very useful to have log images downloaded also (and save bandwidth downloading them at home). How can I achieve this?

Hi,

this is not implemented and most probably won't ever be - the amount of pictures in logs is unexpectable and may lead to a stream of a great data capacity

Hi, Michal.

Wouldn't be possible to set a value of maximum images to download in Geocaching options? I mean, this would be useful to use via wifi, so the bandwidth wouldn't be a problem.

It happens a lot of times to be in a place without internet connection and not being able to download and see log photos. With isolated geocaches, where you have to walk miles in a mountain, for example, this could make all the difference...

Hi,

your usecase seems legit. I'm changing this topic to an idea, let's see if it is interesting for other users too.

Hi,

Especially if it's easier to implement, instead of downloading all images from the logs (and/or a set value of maximum images), I would prefer to have the possibility of copying individual images directly to the attachment tab.

Hi guys,

probably, this is the best topic to discuss this. In recent 4.36.0 was added option to download images for logs as well 🎉. Anyway publsihed solution is not ideal. Images are downloaded over offlinizer and availavble in "Images" page, but then are not used in logs page etc.

I had during last two days completely reworked system how the images are handled and simplified it, a lot. This is the new simple solution I would like to confirm with you, that there won't be any missing functionality etc.

What will change in the next (Beta) version:

  • listing and geocache logs will load images always when internet will be available. So no longer an option "Now to load listing images".
  • old "Auto-load" settings was removed and replaced by a single toggle: "Save images for offline use"
  • when "Save images" will be off > images will be cached by default, so re-open of the cache a while later will cause no re-download (shared cache for 250 MB), but nothing more
  • but when "Save images will be on" > images will be also persistently stored in the "data/geocaching/*" directory. In identical place and structure as GC Offlinizer do. And the same for images from logs.
  • and the bonus > app will run every week automatic cleanup and the data/geocaching/* folders that won't be used for more than month and for caches no longer in the database, dirs will be automatically cleared

Let me know if this is ok for all of you. Thanks.

This sounds great, though I admit I only skimmed the list of changes. Being able to offlinize log images would be wonderful.

It's probably a good time to mention a couple of minor things about images in the current version. 1. Thumbnails are blurry though the underlying image is sharp, and 2. Images are presented in reverse order from the cache page. Sometimes I upload in a certain order to arrange the story. First uploaded is first shown on web page, but last (rightmost) in Locus. Minor, but consistent.

Thanks, good points.

  • blurred images > will be fixed for new caches, for already downloaded, it will stay as is
  • order of attachments > please check the order for a new downloaded caches over Locus Map. It should be correct in the latest version. At least for me, it match to what I see on the web. If not, write me the cache code, thanks.

I tried the beta. Looks like the image order is fixed, thanks. It only shows 10 max, and it's the last 10 rather than the first, but I can live with that. Thumbnail sharpness seems good too.

I noticed a "From friends" toggle, nice! But sometimes when coming in to the logs page (ie after Update), it shows "From friends" at the top left, with no "All" as I think you intended.

GC1W56F has a log with a ridiculous number of pictures, if you need an edge case for testing. Cheers.

Just to be sure: Starting from what beta-version the updated image handling is present? I don't think in 4.36.0.1 (25.9.2026) since I cant see any infos in its Readme-file posted in the Locus-forum and Menion described image-changes at 27.9 here.

My last comment referred to the beta, 4.36.0.1, dated the 25th. Definitely has some changes around images, including the new friends filter.

These changes are already in the latest public 4.36. Wait please till end of the week on the next Beta. I'm just finalizing second bigger rework of how the images are handling so there will be for sure something to test 🙂

Menion, thanks a lot for improving loading log images!

I want to add some ideas to think of, especially if people are using either a slow or a expensive Internet connection (abroad or in the countryside):

1) I think Autoload of Logimages is not necessary. They should just be loaded if somebody clicks onto a button "Load Logimages". And in this case just thumbnails should be loaded: e.g. https://img.geocaching.com/cache/log/thumb/ae4ab75a-a65e-408c-ae52-04f0166c7b68.jpg instead of https://img.geocaching.com/cache/ae4ab75a-a65e-408c-ae52-04f0166c7b68.jpg

2) Just if the user clicks onto a certain image, Locus should download a larger version. In the case of logimages perhaps the 640 px-Versions are enough, like: https://img.geocaching.com/cache/log/large/ae4ab75a-a65e-408c-ae52-04f0166c7b68.jpg , no need for loading original https://img.geocaching.com/cache/ae4ab75a-a65e-408c-ae52-04f0166c7b68.jpg

3) GC-Offlinizer: If "Also download gallery images" on:

a) Maybe a limit would be clever, since there are Cachetypes with usually lots of Images (Earthcaches, Virtual Caches) : E.g. for https://coord.info/GCQJMB 346 (!) images will be downloaded, which takes very long to download - even for just 1 Cache.

b) like as in 2) the "640 px"-version is enough for Logimages, no need for the giant Original images.

Hi Sonny,

thanks for the feedback. Agree that the quality of the log images is set to too high. I tried to avoid a blurry thumbnails etc, Anyway

- thumbnails for geocache log images will use the "thumbnail" endpoint, that returns approx 100x75px big images. They will be probably a little blurry (sorry Viajero, I wrote it will be fixed, but won't).

- click on the log image will open "largeUrl" as you suggest, so approx 640x480 images. In most cases, good enough.

- GC Offlinizer - because it will now also download "largeUrl" images, I vote against the cap

So ... next Beta.
