Geocaching: Include GCVote.com

theonlytruth shared this idea 11 years ago
Completed

Please include an option to load the cache rating for a single cache and also for a list of caches.

GCVote.com is an international rating platform with a greasmonkey script and so integration in browsers and for exmple also in c:geo.

My thread was merged with this one so I just wanted to add the additional info here for someone who can`t decide yet:

Support for viewing ratings of geocaches and voting via GC-Vote. (If you don`t know what GC-Vote is, here is more info http://gcvote.com/ tl;dr: 5 star voting for geocaches available even for basic geocaching.com members)

Because orientating in caches quality just by number of favorites is not that good (you can`t be sure if people don`t like it or didn`t vote yet) :)

Two screenshots how it could look like:

hehe, I`m glad you like it :)

and mainly glad that compare to topic about "favorites" (https://getsatisfaction.com/locus/top...), here is reaction ;)

I`m now thinking about small improvements, so discussion is welcome. Currently, you have to

1. put some data to category

2. select (all) points

3. tap on "GCVote" in menu to load data from GCVote server to selected caches

It`s fast (1000 caches takes around 50 seconds) and it`s working pretty well, anyway ...

questions to discuss:

1. any interest to possibility to refresh GCVote value in cache "Information" screen?

2. interest in voting from Locus?

3. interest for automatic loading of GCVote values for import PQ files? (I`m not big fan of this, but I`m asking)

1. Yes that would be handy, not that I am going to use it much, but why not to have the option there too, right?

2. Yes, that would be awesome!

3. Don`t know what that is/does at all.

1. I would like this. Maybe automatic refresh when updating general cache data.

2. Oh yes. Please add this in the log screen. So I could the log completely with Trackables and GCVote :)

3. Not interesting for me, because I`m no PM, but in general it could make sense.

oki, point 1 is done. It was simple.

Anyway in point 2, I`m little bit stuck on it. Usually helps to leave it be for a while, so that will be my solution.

So in next Locus version will be full support for loading and using GCVote values. Voting later (release is planned on +- friday)

1. Refresh can be done manually in DB screen, but if you already implemented it, ok :)

2. I ususlaly log and vote on my desktop PC, so no need here.

3. That would be handy, maybe load only the missing votes to reduce load on the GCVote server? Updates can be done manually on the DB screen. "Load GCVote ratings" could be a checkbox next to "Empty Category".

Thanks for the great work!

Nice implementation hopefully Kuratkoo will integrate that into the GSAK import plugin to avoid double serverload at GCVOTE.

To Your questions:

First I would point out that everything should be done to keep the serverload at GCVOTE at minimum (some weeks ago they had a lot of problems with that).

So from my opinion:

no automatic update of GCVotes

2) I log on my pc so for me no voting from Locus is necessary (I`m note a fan of fieldnotes eihter since most of them fieldnote are unsatisfactory from the owners perspective.

3) I`ll follow Chris`s comment.

BTW: Did you implement that stars on the map as overlay to the normal icon? If so, couldn`t a climber be implemented as overlay too (T5 icons ;) )
