Edit POI with keyboard with arrow keys

Manfred Valentan shared this problem 8 years ago

I am using a keyboard with arrow keys. I noticed that when I edit the name of a POI and use the arrow keys to go right, the cursor doesn't simply stop at the end of the text field. With an additional right arrow key press, I am sent to the attachments screen, from which I can't go back by simply pressing the left arrow key.

Using Locus Pro 3.10.3 on a Galaxy Note (international GT-N7000) running SlimSaber 4.4.4 build 9, my keyboard app is Thumb Keyboard 4.6.4

solution: be careful and stop tapping arrow key if text field ends :)

Hmm interesting. By default, when you tap on right button, Android should automatically move focus on another active item in screen, so usually some buttons or another edit text fields.

What happen to you is a surprise for me. Unfortunately default Android keyboard do not have arrow keys and your keyboard seems to be paid. Do you know about any other keyboard that has arrow keys and which I may use for testing?

And yes, gynta's solution is also possible ;).

Thanks guys, both tips works fine.

Hmm so ... what happen now, is Android default behavior. I'm checking source code of this "tabbed component" and there is really hardcoded > tap on right/left - switch on right/left.

So I see there a method to hack this little bit, but question is - is it really so big problem Manfred? Also isn't more users expected that tap on left/right really switch tabs instead of do nothing?

From my point of view, current system is OK and should not be changed. Discussion is anyway open.

I

tend to use quite long POI names, and often find myself scrolling

through the text field. With no way to know when it ends, I often find myself

on the next screen. It is more of an annoyance than a real problem. If this is the default Android behaviour, then you should not change this, for sake of consistency with the ecosystem.

I was just surprised by this behaviour. While it makes sense to jump to the next text field on the same screen when pressing up or down arrow, switching to a whole new screen with the right arrow and not being able to get back with the left arrow is unexpected. So I'll just deal with it then...

Thanks for the quick responses and explaination, and keep up the excellent work!

Hmm problem here is really that you are not able to get back with left arrow. For me it works OK when I press only left/right arrows. But when I on attachments tab press for example top arrow (which highlight items in top panel), then it starts to make a troubles. Hmm all this should be set or reconfigured, but to be true, it takes some time. Second problem is that same behavior will be probably on all screens with tabs and edittexts, like POI Alert, Parking etc.

So if you do not mind, I'll leave this problem as is for now. When I'll find some more elegant solution, I'll do something with it. Thanks for understanding.

Of course, I understand! Does it help you if I report other occurrences of the problem?

Probably not as all will be based on same system. So in the end, there will be only single place where this should be changed. Changed in the case, there will be more people that convince me, that current behavior is really bad :). But thanks.

FYI, same behaviour on Android devices with hardware keyboard like e.g. Sony Xperia Pro. Personally, I got used to it and I am fine to switch to left panel by pressing my finger onto tab selection (on top of the screen). I miss much more that in Locus, stuff like Fn+POS1 or Fn+END to quickly jump to beginning/end of text fields, FN+LEFT / Fn+RIGHT to jump to previous/next word start, FN+DOWN/UP to jump to previous/next paragraph, and all 6 with additionally pressing SHIFT do not work like e.g. in text editor apps. That would especially ease the navigation in description the field.

For me (Xperia X, Android 8.0, Locus Maps 3.33.2, Logitech K480 bluetooth keyboard with german layout) everything seems to work as expected. I'm creating hundreds of POIs with attachments and I can work very fast now. I can jump from one field to the next with TAB, but not with LEFT. Back with SHIFT TAB is also working. Didn't test the old IBM model F keyboard with USB connection, but I'm very happy with the logitech.
