Device pressure and step count sensors gpx log

Hi,

First of all, a happy new year for Locus dev team. My idea (or question ?) is the following:

Locus pro is supporting ant+ devices very well. In my opinion may be the best app regarding to the ant+ stability. Supporting so well ant+ in the Anroid world means that Samsung phone are targeted. I am saying that because this brand supports ant+ on almost all devices, at least all smartphones. One can of course find also the ant+ capability on some Sony or HTC phones.

In Samsung smarphones there are a lot of embeded sensors. More specifically, on my note 4, I have a pressure sensor and a more commun step counter. It would be great if it was possible to include these data (pressure+steps) in a recorded gpx file, especially during hiking in a hilly place. It was my case in the christmas vacations because I have been hiking in the french Reunion Island (close to Madagascar).

Do you think that this can be possible in anear future ? If yes, what should be the battery supplementary drain cost ?

Best regards

Hello sl91,

thanks, happy new year to you too!

I think, this feature is doable. Pressure sensor is already used for altitude optimizations and system for "step counter" probably won't be too complicated. Anyway all around it is quite a lot of work, so not a task on short evening.

I'll leave this as an open idea.

About battery consumption - I expect that step counter won't require a lot of power. Pressure sensor will be little bit worst, but I'm not a hardware expect, so I do not know exact numbers, sorry.

Hello Menion,

happy new year from me as well. I was looking why the step counter is not working in the recording tab and based on this answer it seems that the step count is only for ANT+. I support this request, but I have a few comments which may clarify things:

- the step sensor reports current of 1 mA, so it does not require too much power

- there are in fact two step sensors in Samsung phones (in my case S4m VE) - step counter (offline collection) and step detector (provides actual steps when enabled)

- I had limited success with applications accessing these sensors, some did not provide any value with step detector and quite a low number of steps with step counter, some provided a value when another application (such as S healh) was running in the background, but maybe it is just buggy sensor in my case.

But it would be a nice feature to have (even better would be the access to external sensors in fitness band, e.g. mifit, but each manufacturer has different API :-( ).

Hi,

Step detection and account does not consume power. I have a Garmin Vivosmart watch for everyday step account . It uses two small (not rechargeable) batteries which are supposed to last one year. After 14 months they are still doing the job. For the pressure it is another story but as explained by Menion, Locus pro is already able to read the pressure value given by the embeded sensor in order to correct the altitude values.

For the step count, the galaxy note 4 has also two sensors and many thirdparty apps are able to read them as I have checked, like Sportstrack...without any need for running a specific Samsung software/utility in the background.

Regards
