Kml vs kmz

Is either file format preferred over the other in terms of size and or speed of rendering?... Or anything else I might not have considered?

I save maps from a different program and open them as map items in locus for offline use. I can save the original ad kml or kmz. I know kmz is a zip. Is one format better than the other for some reason?

Good day Clayton,

as you already know, except "zip" compression, there is no difference between them. KMZ format is usable in cases, you do not have just KML file, but also some images, attachments, etc. Or, of course, if KML is too big, then compression helps with transfer between devices.

You should not notice any big difference in Locus, because Locus just firstly extract KMZ file (which should be quite fast) and then work with it like with basic KML file. If you transfer just a small single KML files, then there is no reason to use it as KMZ. If you usually have some GroundOverlays or your files are bigger, then KMZ worth a try.

Hope I gave you answer to your question. Feel free to ask if something is not clear.

Thanks. I think I'll keep using KMZ because they have always worked great for me. The only reason I was wondering about KML files is that the Google Earth Android App won't work with the same KMZ file (even though that same KMZ file works with Google Earth on my computer). It would be nice to have one file for each place and be able to view it in Locus Pro and Google Earth... maybe some day Google Earth's App will be able to handle these files better.

Ah understand. Not sure about plans of Google with GE application as it looks for me, they invest really low time to it.

Anyway consider display points in GE directly over Locus. You should display every single point (from bottom menu in point screen) or more points at once directly from folder (most bottom right button).
