Google Maps tracks - import to Locus: error message "Unsupported file format"

Hi, as most of you know, the best way of planning a tour is on a desktop with Google Maps. But getting it from there to Locus on your Smartphone is the problem.

Google Maps offers a very quick and simple way of exporting tracks by e-mail (see screenshots 1. - 2.). After that you can open it on your smartphone with Google Maps (screenshots 3. - 5.).

BUT: opening the e-mail with Locus gives you the error message "Unsupported file format" (screenshot 6.). Implementing this feature would be a great step forward for Locus!

All the other ways of exporting Google Maps tracks by kml file to My Maps and from there to Dropbox and then to Locus on your Smartphone are quite complicated and take long.

A more direct way would be to import Google Maps tracks from Drive, because My Maps saves ithem there automatically. So, if you can't manage import by e-mail: how about Drive?

Looking forward to your answer,

Wilfried

Good day Wilfried,

in URL you have in your email are only start and end points. Not the track itself. Do you think it should be useful to take these two points and let Locus compute final track? Because this new "Locus track" will be different compare to Google Map.

So from my point of view, it's better to not handle this type of request, then display some completely different track that will just connect defined start and end points. What you think?

Hi, Menion,

thanks for your answer. But you got something wrong with the Google Maps URL: it does show the complete track, even with all alternatives. Just try it in any browser (IE, Chrome, Firefox): https://goo.gl/maps/PfReCBbtaww. In Google Maps it works (see my screenshot 5.), but in Locus you get the error message "Unsupported file format" (screenshot 6.).

Of course I can use Google Navigation, but as Locus is better, I'd prefer that. Do you think, you could make it possible to import Google Maps URLs to Locus? Would be great!

Cheers!

Wilfried

Good day Wilfried,

In your URL you have only start and end points. Not the track itself.

Hello Wilfried,

in url is really just start and end points. When you open this URL in Google Maps, they on background compute track between these points and display it.

Locus is unfortunately unable to compute exactly same track as Google, so result should be different. And question, not just on you, is "what is better": different track then you wanted or no track? I vote for a "no track" as it at least directly say - hey, it's not possible to get this track to Locus.

Hi, Gynta and Menion,

you didn't use the URL I sent you: https://goo.gl/maps/PfReCBbtaww. With that you get the complete track in Google Maps: see the attached screenshot (here on Internet Explorer).

If you don't get that, something ist wrong with your Windows desktop pc or your browser.

I wonder, what your answer will be now.

Ah, seems you are correct. Track is maybe hidden in

data=!3m1!4b1!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x47bf2f87e609f755:0x3a360cb251da9dce!2m2!1d6.9404271!2d50.9744564!1m5!1m1!1s0x47bf2c59aa13fac9:0xefd26d0243e957d!2m2!1d6.99902!2d51.09292!3e2

But hot to read it? Hmm, if this is really a track itself, then as gynta wrote ... "happy voting" :).

Hi, Menion, would be great, if you could make import of Google Maps tracks to Locus possible! As you can see in the attached screenshot, the URL has every turning point of the complete track.

Looking forward to what you can do about it!

Better way is not use goggle maps.

Furkot.com

create your route. export it...send, email, blue tooth what ever to locus and it comes in correct and complete.

Hi Dave, did you read the beginning of this thread? It's about "the best way of planning a tour", which is on a desktop and with Google Maps - or do you know a better one? The problem is getting the tour to Locus in a direct and simple way - like getting it to Google Maps on your smartphone or tablet..

Do you have one? I wonder...

Yes Wilfred, I read that. I also Disagree that google is the best.

I do indeed know a better way.

Furkot.com as I posted

I just export the route or track from Furkot and mail it. It opens every time with Locus

Please give it a try.

Hello guys,

older topic, but no needs here. Url used by the Google Maps is still the same and the format is not known. Also because we now offer our own https://web.locusmap.app web planner, there is no big priority on support for the Google Maps platform. So idea declined. Thanks for the idea & comments.
