How do I download vector maps of the USA? I bought a Samsung Galaxy Player, which is not a phone, it connects with wi-fi. I need vector maps to make the program useful. I have been trying all the ways presented with no success.

Thanks guys,

I`ll summarize this a little (in same ways as it is in application)

Vector maps can be used thanks to MapsForge library and future improvements are based mainly on work of MapsForge creators

- this is important, because for reporting some issues with Vector maps, first step hould be testing maps in MapsForge application and if there all will be fine, you can report this also as issue in Locus (here on this forum).

About creating maps - as I know, exist three main possibilities how to get Vector maps

UPDATED: 7.3.2012

Maps can be directly downloaded in Locus. For this, you need to purchase credit in Locus Shop (in Locus, tap on Menu > Functions > Locus Shop). When you`ll have credit, go to Map Manager screen, tap on Vector tab and then on bottom download button.

These maps are generated on server. Actualization are once per 1-2 months. Maps are downloaded compressed (by ZIP) so size is smaller then final size on card (that`s why in list of maps to download are two numbers).

Maps can be manually downloaded from http://www.vectormaps4locus.eu/.

These are same map as can be downloaded by addon. This site is handled by one Locus user. Simply download maps and place them into Locus/mapsVector directory

Maps can be manually created by this method http://code.google.com/p/mapsforge/wiki/MapFileWriterOsmosis.

By this method are generated maps on server

Good day,

I have a few questions as well :-)

I used the VectorMap addon of Locus Pro to download a country map from zoom levels 5 up to and including 13. I did this over two days, since it was more than 100,000 tiles. I also used the "Separate map (SQL type) for this.

The zoom level of 13 is not enough to see all the streets, so I want a higher level. My questions are:

1) Which level will be sufficient?

2) Can I add the new level to the existing database?

Thank you

Hi Kenjutsu,

seems like you`re little bit messed up Vector maps and basic raster maps.

- all online maps are raster. These map you probably downloaded. I`ll not comment number of tiles you`re downloading - for this read here http://getsatisfaction.com/locus/topi...,

- addon Vector maps is used for direct downloading of VECTOR maps, more in first post

to your questions, that talk about raster and not vector maps. Level you want to download, really depend on what you want to do. Anyway best is to combine levels and areas. I mean, download few complete level on some higher zooms and then main interesting areas in detailed zooms.

Yes, this is possible - on screen, where you select zooms to download, tap on bottom "Change type" button and select "External map". This will allow to select already downloaded map

anyway, I suggest you to try vector maps first. Maybe you`ll be satisfied with them and there will be no need for mass downloading of raster maps

Thank you for the reply.

What I do when I use the "Vector Maps" add-on, is to select my Online map as instructed by the add-on. I choose "MapQuest" classic. The reason is that the OSM map for the country I am looking for, does not contain all the street names, where as the "MapQuest" classic map does. I then let the "Vector Maps" add-on do its job.

I thought that since I was using the "Vector Maps" add-on, it was downloading vector maps, as opposed to raster maps.

So if I understand correctly:

1) I can select a specific area, and only choose the zoom level I need, and change the type to "External map (SQL type), and select an existing database

2) I can keep on doing this as needed, thus not overloading the servers

3) Locus Pro will then use this single db and will be able to make all the separate pieces work together as one map

Thank you

Are you really using Addon - Vector maps? https://market.android.com/details?id...

and yes, you understand correctly, just limit downloading only to necessary areas. Also count with limitation 2GB to one single SQLite file

Yes, I bought the "Vector Maps" add-on from the market, and under Main menu -> Locus -> Addons -> Vector Maps are selected.

Just one more question: I want to select a area on the map, but as I am busy doing so, Locus automatic zoom in to a higher level. How can I prevent this?

Thank you

if you bought it, then use it :). Go to map manager, "Vector" tab and here press + button on bottom panel!

Automatic zoom - you have to have enabled gps and also automatic zoom in Locus settings.

Is there a change of using vector maps in the current version of Locus Pro (2.1.1)?

I just downloaded the new maps from MapsForge (0.3, former were 0.24), put them on my SD-card, started Locus, but the tab for "vector" where I choose the maps is just empty. I uninstalled and re-installed Locus Pro, rebooted my phone, moved the map-files to some other directory (and added that to Locus Pro to search for maps there) but nothing would help, the "vector-tab" just shows general information but not my maps.

The link for the `manually created` options seems to be broken. The error page links to

http://code.google.com/p/mapsforge/w/...

I`m wondering if this project has been renamed and maybe the appropriate link is

http://code.google.com/p/mapsforge/wi...

nono even if I remove it as official response to normal topic, it`s not possible. Maybe because of comments that are already attached to this post. Nevermind..
