Map labels upside down when travelling south

Mike shared this problem 9 years ago
Closed

I am using Ontario, Canada OSM maps and when travelling south, the labels for roads, towns, etc. are all upside down. I know it's not a problem with the map set because OsmAnd doesn't have this problem.

I am using the latest version of Locus Pro downloadable from Google Play.

Ontario, Canada OSM

hmm, downloaded from?

Hi Mike,

basically it doesn't matter where have you downloaded the maps or which maps do you use. Maps in Locus are created from small images called map tiles. These tiles are static images and we can not influence the orientation of labels or captions.

Anyway you can find in Locus store maps called like : "..Ontario vector map". Vector maps are rendered in your device and we can influence the size of text or appearance of map elements. Unfortunately our solution is not able to rotate labels based on orientation of your device (at this moment).

Thank you

hehe - That was the reason why I asked.

He said" Osm*nd doesn't have this problem"

Must be a great tool - or we compare different things...

:D

I am using vector maps and you said "our solution is not able to rotate labels based on orientation of your device (at this moment)". Will this be fixed sometime soon?

gynta, why would you automatically assume that I am using tiled maps? To my knowledge, OpenStreet Maps maps are not tiled maps.

OsmAnd displays the same map data correctly. The problem is with Locus.

huh? I said? where?

I installed now Osm4nd and only point labels are rotated or I'm wrong?

i need also here a screenshot..

Hello Mike and Gynta,

just to answer on Mike's question (till your discussion move to different spaces).

OsmAnd use completely different approach to work with OSM data compare to Locus. Unfortunately as Peter wrote, this is limitation of Locus. Currently there are no plans to fix this issue for two main reasons:

1. rendering system is created by 3rd party developer so it should be in first step fixed by this team

2. MapsForge (rendering engine we use), is based on rendering map tiles which are then draw. Not on rendering vector infromation directly, so now it's not even possible to rotate a texts on the fly, sorry.

How does OsmAnd display the same labels correctly then?

OsmAnd as well as many other apps that render vector data, keep in memory what should be drawn on screen (lines, points, etc), and draw them when needed.

Compare to this, Locus prepare from these points, lines small images (tiles) and draw these tiles.

Thanks for the info. I am very surprised other users find this acceptable (upside down labels). I think Locus is an excellent app, however this is a major showstopper, in my opinion.

Hello Mike,

there is no chance on our side with this issue. Anyway because this is not simply solvable in next months, I'm closing this ticket. Till we will use current system of drawing maps, there is no method how to do this, sorry.

For the past year I was using OsmAnd+. But I was unhappy that OsmAnd does not show a live elevation profile for tracks. So I purchased Locus Map Pro as I was eager to use the dashboard where I could include an elevation profile that shows me where I am in the track and how far uphill I still need to go.

But apart from the dashboard Locus Map is a big disappointment especially when it comes to how maps are displayed.

As the original poster states it can't be that text is displayed upside down when travelling south. OsmAnd is that clever that it redraws the map when travelling south so that text is displayed in the correct orientation. If I would have known that Locus Pro is not capable to do this I would have never purchased the app. This is standard basic functionallity and I never though that this would cause a problem. I am really disappointed and would gladly receive my money back if possible.

I've all but given up on Locus Map. It simply isn't suitable for car/motorcycle based navigation. I know it's too late to get my money back, but had I known, I would've done it sooner.

Good day guys.

Well, if we look on our main description on Google Play, you may read "Are you keen mountain hikers? Do you love your morning runs? Or bike trips with your family? And what about hunting geocaches on your vacations? Yes? Locus Map Pro - multi-functional outdoor navigation app is here for all your activities."

If you look on our homepage, on every posts we wrote, we really rarely inform that Locus is made for auto/moto navigation. Well, I personally use it always for these activities and we know that many many other users as well, but as I wrote, Locus is not made primary for a common car navigation!

You may also check number of users that ask such question (or report it as a problem): http://help.locusmap.eu/search/rotate%20names . As you see, there is not much of them, so also because of this and also based on own experience from using Locus in the field, we do not consider this limitation as serious that needs immediate solution.

I'm not talking about technical possibilities here. We use 3rd party library that do not allow this feature for now, but it's another story.

So, Jim, I see you used Locus just a three days before you wrote this post. Locus Map Free exists mainly because we wants to offer people possibility to test, if app will be useful for them or not (because 15 minutes refund policy from Google is really useless here). Anyway I case of serious logical reasons, I personally see not a big problem in refund within few days after purchase. I like happy users and you can't be such user when You need an app for car navigation only. So if you still wants to refund, just confirm it and my colleague will do it in Monday.

Mike, this is more complicated ... one year is really really too long time and price for app isn't too high I believe, so if you excuse me, I have to deny this request. I really hope you find usage in Locus in your everyday life for activities, where car navigation apps don't have sense. Sorry for a longer post and thank You for understanding.

Hi Menion,

just to be clear, I used or wanted to use Locus for cycling and not for car navigation. The overlay Dashboard (only Pro version) of Locus is great and also the handling is much better then OsmAnd+. But the map presentation is disappointing. Checkout OSMAND+ please. Here Locus can largely improve.

Yesterday I used locus to navigate along a gpx track (this works only in the Pro version). Maybe it was my fault and I have not configured the routing correctly ("Yours") but when I was using some shortcuts on the track (I know the area quite well) locus told me that I am off track and said that the route is being calculated newly to bring be back on track.

But then I was not lead back to the track. There was big "?" in the navigation panel.

During this time the map was rotating like mad although I was steadily driving into one direction.

So this made it even difficult to see where I am on the map :-(

Then when I was actually back on the track, locus seemed not to realise this and the track was always 50m ahead of me on the screen but I never could catch up. So I had to restart locus map then finaly I got placed back on the track.

So yes please I would be happy to get my money refunded. Please let me know how to get this going.

Thanks a lot.

Best Regards,

Jim

Hallo Hana,

thanks a lot this is extremly fair. I just removed Locus Pro from my device.

Please let me know once there is a newer version that fixes these issues. I gladly would like to give locus map a second chance as I like the user interface.

Kind Regards,

Jim

Hello Jim,

you may keep and use Free version without a problems. Anyway correct is that navigation along imported files is only in Locus Map Pro.

Problem with "madly" rotating map was anyway probably because of enabled "hardware compass" under settings > sensors. Device mounted on bike may really affect internal compass and this mess may happen. By disabling of this settings, orientation of map will be based on your movement and no such mad rotation should happen.

You also wrote that Locus not realized you are back on track. It's of course possible that there is any issue, but without at least some screenshot, it's really complicated to say where is a real problem.

And design of maps ... well, agree it should be a lot better. On second side, LoMaps from Locus Store are small, fast and also quite good looking and except not-rotating texts and small issues with priority of texts, we are quite satisfied. And as I wrote - because there were no serious push on us to change it, we rather invest time on different features.

So sorry to disappoint you, fortunately Google Play is full of various applications, so it's almost sure that every user soon or later find it's favorite! Good luck and have a nice days on bike!

Hi Menion, I gave locus a second chance this time with brouter an it was doing its job quite well. So I would like to purchase it again. But in Playstore I already own it :-(. As you have been fair refunding the money I would like to be fair and pay for the product but I just do not know how ? Please let me know how to fix this. Thx.

Dear Jim.

Thank you for your second chance, Menion is now very glad :-)

For sure, I've just again checked your Locus order on Google Play Merchant center. Your purchase is really already refunded. Please, try to remove cache data of Google Play store in your device. Then try to purchase Locus Pro again. I hope, it will help!

In case of troubles, please contact us.

Kind regards

Hana

Hallo Hana,

clearing the cache did not change anything :-(

Is there a way to sent you a private message to continue this discussion outside of this thread ?

Thanks a lot.

Jim

It's because Locus is in : "Woman friendly mapmodus".

Aah...sorry Hana...at least some woman ;-)

You'll probably noticed some woman navigators rotate paper maps during a drive.

So woman are trained to read map labels upside down.

Rotating labels would be a surprising feature and only bring confusion.

Fortunatelly, the upside down voice navigation hints sound like the same, and saves the battery, if not in the car.... :-)
