How to remove gaps from recording?

Ingo Rau shared this question 7 years ago
Answered

When I pause a recording (either wanted or eg. when the phone restarted), the resulting track contains a gap. Sometimes this is not wanted, so I tried to remove the gap, but I didn't manage. When I select a point before the gap and the "delete part of track" up to a point after the gap, the gap is still there, just a little before or after the delete portion.

Am I doing somthing wrong or is this a bug?

Hello Ingo,

this is currently not possible simply directly in Locus. You may export track to GPX and delete gap manually as a workaround. I personally can't consider this as a "bug". When you pause recording, then it's expected that this pause will be stored and visible in final recorded track.

I get that, but what about "involuntary" pauses, like when the phone restarted? For example when changing the battery, I'm not really making a pause, but Locus restarts in "paused" mode for an unfinished track.

But perhaps that's more the problem: Shouldn't an unfinished track be automatically continued? I mean, that only happens when Locus or the phone crashes, so the obvious reaction is to restart recording asap. Right now, I have a special task (with E-Robot) that automatically starts Locus after a reboot and restarts the recording if a flag "is recording" is set (which I have to set manually with another task). I could get rid of this all, if Locus would just continue recording. Only have to start Locus on boot. Would make life on the road much easier :)

I'm not saying that removing of gaps is bad idea! I have same experience with incorrectly paused track recording. Just yesterday ... hmm I've solved it by splitting and then merging back. Complicated, agree...

Track recording should automatically start after restart! If you start Locus within 10 minutes after crash, track recording starts automatically! Otherwise it just switch to "Pause" and notify about "unfinished recording". This do not happen to you? Hmm..

Ok, have to check that out again. In holiday, I had problem with phone restarting on its own (probably due to overheating, having a bit of troubles with that one...), but it in battery settings I can see that it was "unavailable" for sometimes more than 10 minutes. So perhaps that's why it didn't restart. I think I remember having the same problem when manually switching the battery, but not 100% sure, so will get back to you on that...

Well, I tried it again: The recording is restarted once I open Locus, as you wrote above. It's quite likely that I had cases where it took longer than 10min (there was something with battery temperature, I think), and I only realized after a while.

But wouldn't it be possible to restart recording even without having to open Locus? I mean, there is a Locus background process that gets started on boot, so technically that should be possible?! Doesn't need to be the default, but it would help a lot...

Hello Ingo,

oki, i've improved it little bit so one minute after restart of device will be also checked if there is any unfinished track recording and if so, Locus start it again. So in cases, like when device restart by itself by accident in backpack, Locus will continue with recording automatically.

Just be aware, it will need some more testing so this won't be included in tomorrow new version.

Thx, sounds great - will check it out when it's ready :)

Just for reference: The "new" Track Editor has explicit function to add or remove gaps from a track. Admittedly, the editor sometimes adds gaps for no reasons, but with this function, they're easily removed. So not really a problem.
