Locus dot icon replaces smaller custom waypoint icons

Not a Problem

When zooming out, custom icons for waypoints are replaced by a standard Locus dot. This might make sense to save map space, but not if the custom icons are smaller than the Locus dot anyway. In this case, the replacement only creates additional display mess.


Suggestion: Do not auto-replace custom waypoint icons on zoom unless they are reasonably larger than the Locus dot.

Hello joeloc,

you use own icons that are even smaller then these tiny dots? Well, except invisible icons, I can hardly image it. May you please post me a screenshot? Thanks

Good day joeloc,

since begin, this was not a problem from my point of view, rather an improvements. Main reason why big icons are made smaller is not some better view on a map but simply speed of application. Small circles are many many times faster to draw then an icons.

I'm testing your file and icons are smaller then simplified circles, as you wrote. When I'm anyway testing what needs to be done to correctly check if icons are smaller or not, it will not for good reason, slow down quite well optimized rendering of icons.

So I'm sorry, in this case, trade of performance for better look is not good enough for me, sorry. I'll keep this in my mind, if there will be any updates in future. Thanks for understanding.

Hmm... ok... I had no idea there was a performance difference between (smaller) custom icon & circle. Obviously, I don't want Locus to lose speed.


It would still be handy if Locus put a little more "sense" into rendering. See below screenshot for example. It has like 3 different poi "categories" (eg campgrounds, hotsprings, mountains). It's not possible to get a basic overview ("what is where in general") because Locus merges all into equal dots.


An idea could be "multi-colored dots": You have a fixed palette of 8 high-contrast colors and then pick the color index by number-of-waypoint-folder % 8 or some such. So different folders would automatically get a distinct color most of the time. Should be simple to implement, no GUI stuff, no impact on performance, more structure on the map.

Oki, understand. Improved for now at least by randomly generated colors for loaded items.
