Returning poi information

Bob Hawkins shared this question 7 years ago
Answered

I use OpenStreetMap with LocusMap. Hard pressing the screen on my 'phone returns road information, but only road information. A standard MapFactor Navigator Free download of OpenStreetMap returns information on points, too. I wonder if I am missing something or does LocusMap not offer that facility?

I use UK data mainly, but am using Portugal now in preparation for a holiday in Madeira (in case this is relevant for poi information).

Hello Bob,

I guess that you use online OpenStreetMap. Basically long press tries to load address for pressed location. If you want to get POI info please download LoMaps maps from Locus store. They work offline and contains offline POIs - you can tap on icon on LoMap map to get more info about point.

More info about LoMaps: http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:maps_locusmaps

I thank you for your reply and suggestion.

I use OpenStreetMapping (OSM) downloaded from OpenAndroMaps at regular intervals that I copy to Internal storage\Locus\mapsVector on my 'phone. I use OSM because of my long association with it and my contributions to it. I do not wish to change to another database if that is what your suggestion means; I wish to avail myself of the OSM tag information attached to its points.

Oh thank you for more information. However LoMaps are also generated from OSM data and OSM is also source for offline POIs. From my point of view are LoMaps POIs the easiest solution how to get (offline) POI information in Locus app.

Please see also other topic that can be interesting for you: http://help.locusmap.eu/topic/where-can-i-download-poi-for-offline-usage

I have downloaded Portugal from Locus Store as you recommended and obtained information related to points, which answers successfully my opening post. I am pleased I have made my first venture into LoMaps! It raises a second issue, however: I have not had the same success searching for a point of interest. SEARCH>SEARCH ADDRESS>Search Address (Offline) states, "Search for addresses and places offline", the page heading states, "Search address (Offline)" and I am asked for a city and a street. Does this infer there is no facility to search for points of interest?

Dear Bob,

I have to say that offline POI are still beta and are their integration into Locus is not ideal at this moment. Please navigate into Menu > More > POI (beta) > select country. This screen helps you to find POI of your interest or shows the nearest POIs on the map.

Consider to join efforts with the Mapsforge community, who meanwhile provide POIs, too, quite nicely.

The POI mechanics Locus uses (I had a look into the DB data model) is massive in comparison.

OAM and mapsforge provide the POIs for download, but Locus cannot (yet) deal with those files.

What you write is interesting: I was about to download "Pois" from http://www.openandromaps.org/en/downloads/europe a day or two ago, then read, unfortunately, "So actually there is no support for these databases in Locus", Progress on the matter of points of interest would be welcome by many, I am sure.
