Offline tracking not working after update / new installation

Hagen Stieper shared this problem 7 years ago
Closed

I use Android version 4.2.1.

I use Locus only in offline mode for recording tracks. After the last update from version 3.21.1 to 3.22.1 it is not working any longer:

After starting, the recording breaks down and Locus tries to open the online map "Outdoors", what cannot work because there is no internet connection. I use it only via GPS.

In the settings of "GPS and location" the option „Track Recording - Set GPS on during the track...", is inactive and it is not possible move that rollbar. If I try, the message "Locus was terminated" displays with the option buttons "Report" and "OK". Pressing OK does not end Locus.

After uninstalling and installing Locus again, the problem persists.

Good day Hagen,

sorry for a complications.

From what you wrote, I'm not perfectly sure what is not working. Fact that Locus Map tries to display some online map has absolutely no effect on recording of tracks. And what does mean that "recording breaks down"?

Crash when you try to change settings ... sorry for this. Issue will be fixed in next version (that is right now uploading to Google Play).

Hi Hagen,

I'm sorry, we provide support only in English. I tested your issue on a device with Android 4.2.2. and really, Locus stopped when the display was put off. However, I didn't succeed in simulation of the online map loading. I'm forwarding this issue to the main developer.

best regards

Well, in a few hours there will be a new version available. Please update you Locus then.

Hi Menion, hi Michal,

Thank you for solving the problem with the setting „GPS and location – Track recording“: After the last Update, the button can be activated without crashing.

But there’s the still the problem that the recording stops, when the screen turns off:

1 After turning the screen on, there is shown an empty map with the notice „unknown problem“.

2 Opening the „Quick Map Switch“, I see, that the „MTB Europe“-Link is active, which naturally does not work in the offline-mode.

3 When I select an offline-map, the recording continues and Locus creates a straight line from the position before the screen turned off to the current position. Recording goes on as long as the screen is turned on, showing the offline map. At the moment, when the screen turns off again, Locus goes back to point 1.

Hi Michal,

you adressed me as „Wolf“ – may be, you wanted to send the mail to someone else?

Unlike Wolf, I have no problem with the locus file system which to me seems very clear.

Hi Hagen,

I can see there is probably some problem in our helpdesk system as it sends wrong replies to wrong requests...

As for your issue - I tested it on a quite old device (Motorola Xoom running on Android 4.2.2.) and I wasn't able to simulate it onthe newest Locus version 3.22.2 - Locus didn't lose GPS fix when recording in the background - I let it run for 5 hours in one stretch and all was OK. Later Androids are equipped by various battery savings utilities that can kill GPS or even Locus but not Android 4.2.1. Do you perhaps use some third party battery optimizing application? Or any task killer "saving" RAM capacity? If yes, switch it off or exclude Locus from its activity.

Good day Hagen,

this is really interesting. In case, after point 3, when you turn on screen you are back at point 1, what you exactly see right after screen turn on? Is Locus loading data like when you start it as new application? From what you wrote, to me it looks like only one possible problem ... when screen is turned off, system for some reason completely "kill" Locus Map application so when you turn screen on, it just start like when you tap on app icon.

On Android 4.2.1 does not exists any optimization technique if I remember correctly. Isn't in your device some new application that should work like "battery optimizer"? Some application that should improve speed of your device, free memory or something like this? Because such app exists and many really terminate other applications when decide, they are not needed anymore.

I may of course send you previous version 3.21.1 if you will be interesting, for a test.

Dear Michal, dear Menion,

there is no battery optimizing app on my device, neither any task-killer.

After point 3 there’s is no delay like starting the app or loading different layers – the empty map of point 1 appears immediately, inclusive the track line until the position where tracking stopped. When I switch back to the offline-map, it appears at once, the mentioned straight line appears and the tracking continues.

A few days ago, before publishing my problem in the Locus Forum, I installed Locus 3.21.1 from the apk-Server. After downloading version 3.21.1, it automatically was „initialized“ by Locus. I tested it, and the problem remained. So I removed version 3.21.1 and installed the current version from play store. When there’s a possibility to make version 3.21.1 run on my phone, I would be happy. Please send it. There will be no problem with the capacity of my mailbox.

I have used Locus Free for more than two years, and I’m happy with it. I don’t need the functions of the Pro-Version. On the other hand, you invested al lot of work in the app – and I would like to make a donation, but I don’t know, how. If possible, I’d like to donate without the google platform.

Thank you so far, have a nice weekend,

Hagen

HI Hagen,

you wrote that "...After downloading version 3.21.1, it automatically was „initialized“ by Locus. I tested it, and the problem remained." So I don't understand why you need 3.21.1. if it had the same problem.

Hi Michal,

Until the march-update, the 3.21.1 Version of Locus ran without any problems. Menion proposed to send me the 3.21.1 Version, an I just answered that the unavoideable initialization leaded to the same problem.

In the meantime, I installed "orux", which works and in which the track recording is not stopped when the screen turns off.

But: The user interface of Locus is much more comfortable - and above all: It's much more BEAUTIFUL. So even when there'll be no solution to my problem now, I'll return to Locus, when I buy a new phone (which may take some time).

Best wishes

Hagen

Good day Hagen,

I've discovered this unfinished topic now, sorry for a delay in my answer - probably mess in communication on our side where wasn't clear if this should be discussion and hopefully solved by me or Michal.

Orux is also excellent tool, drawback is that it's developer do not have so much time on it, so it miss some useful features and it's future also not clear.

Anyway, I have two users include You, who report me some problem with recording with latest version. Unfortunately I'm still unable to find some method how to make Locus more important for system, to prevent this recording disturbing.

I think that problem is that Locus is quite big application and system on some devices may decide, that such big app does not have it's room in operation memory.

Anyway suggest to try install application like this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.silentlexx.gpslock. It's only purpose is to keep GPS awake. So you may give it a try and use it together with Locus Map track recording. Maybe it will work.

You also wrote about version 3.21.1. Are you still interested? Here is it if you wants to try it.

I'm sorry I do not have better answer for You now. Thanks for understanding.

Hi Menion,

thank you for your new effort to help me. In the meantime I decided to go on with Orux until I'll buy a new phone. Now, hiking and biking, I open my routes on both applications - Locus and Orux. I navigate with Orux and look on Locus how far I have to walk / ride and how high I have to climb.
