Extend support to CGIAR data

Hello, it would be nice if Locus extended support for reading elevation data to freely available CGIAR format, CGIAR data are known to have quality advantage over obsolete SRTM.

There may be a little problem that CGIAR is under Apache license.

Hi,

I've quickly tried to find out more about mentioned format but it seems that it's data set not the format. Would you have more info about this format, please? Or whats are the main benefits, please?

I'd like to also say that we do not use raw SRTM data. Our elevation data are combination from more sources - mainly the Viewfinderpanoramas data. But we use for example data from Lidar missions (in Austria and part of Germany).

Sure, info is taken from graphHopper project. It offers both SRTM and CGIAR format for computing routing data. As mentioned in the docs CGIAR is better. The only downside is that the tiles aren't GPL, but the project creator successfully negotiated an exception. Please contact Peter from gH project how to do that.

Hi,

I've contacted Peter from GH project and it seems that there is no advantage for CGIAR data. I even think that HGT files in Locus are better. Especially for mountain areas , Austria or Slovenia. As I wrote we do not use raw SRTM data.

CGIAR doesn't use any custom format. You can download data as GeoTIFF or ArcGIS grid format. I think that QGIS or GDAL SW is able to convert geoTIFF into HGT format.

I only want to say that there is simple workaround how to manually add these elevation data into Locus.

Thank you for understanding

Hi, if there's no real advantage compared to SRTM, then I think decline the idea.

Yep, ticket closed. Workaround for CGIAR data exist :)
