Simple coordinate copy and paste

David Ber shared this question 11 years ago
Answered

is there any way to simply copy the co-ordinates as text from locus into another app - other than by exporting them as a gpx/kml file/etc?

ie. in the format: 53.680550 -2.517650 as text.

At the moment I`m doing this by sharing points into a document, opening the geohash link it points to, copying the coordinates in the format above and pasting into other apps - which is quite long winded and painful. A simple copy coords as text would be reaaaly helpful.

and into which app you want to paste coordinates? Isn`t there more simple way how to get them there, by some direct sharing ...

I think I also had this problem. I jsut wanted to copy to clipboard the coordinates and I couldnt find a quick way. Maybe I found, but it was not obvious. It would be nice to have a dialog window with quick coordinates (DD.DDDD or DD° MM` SS or DD° MM.MMM) format choose form. Or to quickly export them in all of these formats. I had a situations that I was sending my coordinates to my friend just over sms and I send him them in one format, and it turned out that he didn`t know how to put them in google maps, because it was accepting only the different format. This can be really annoying. So there should be a easy way of choosing the format of coordinates before every export ( even if they are not going to clipboard)

when you share coordinates (share >map center) in Locus, you may insert plain text but also complete url to defined place. So there should be no need to copy coordinates into google maps (in case your friend) directly

David, I still don`t know what you want to do ... may you explain it little bit?

Most tracking apps understand the *.kml format.

So you can use "share" (eg. as quickbutton on the right panel)

->share mapcenter ->kml ->share ->to your your cloud.

Import this to your favorite App or share with other friends.

Better than edit some textstrings.

hmm..

Which of your App doesn`t understand .kml?

Menion,

I want also a simple copy and paste feature inside Locus.

That is, when I`m calculating some point for geocaching (eg: the intersection of 2 lines) I make there a point now. What should be nice is that I could copy the coordinates of this point and paste them when adding a waypoint in a geocache.

In some of the previous versions, I was able to select a point, and then by holding the coordinates for a long time to select the coordinates. I could then copy and paste them. The format was N XXo XX.XXX | E XXo XX.XXX.

I had to remove some spaces and paste it 2 times, but it was workable.

Could you make something that works inside Locus that understands the copy and paste of coordinates without the hassle?

I hope I made myself clear.

If you feel that this comment belongs in a separate thread, I do not mind if it gets moved.

October 22, 2012 14:13 - David Ber post this as an "Question"

Is this now a "Idea"?

So a mod has to change it - and we can vote for them...

I just created this topic: https://getsatisfaction.com/locus/top...

I think the subject is slightly different then the one of this current thread.

Fine, new topic is welcome. Seems that author of this question do not react

I understand this idea. It`s little bit harder to complete but doable. Also do not forget on ability to create location by pasting coordinates which is already in Locus implemented

hmmm, so maybe im not aware of that. how it works>?

I was rather thinking on possibility to paste some text as a coordinates ...

for example go to any point category, tap on most left bottom button to add new points and tap on "Clipboard", here you may paste any text and Locus will try to parse. If will be process unsuccessful, I`ll gladly improve it

yes, you created that topic as a response to this discussion right? I saw it.

Or this is exactly what you were looking for? :)

Im lost now:)

Firstly I posted my easy pasting idea here, but then I created the new topic. And now you are saying that something like that is already implemented. Is it?

I`m saying that handling text from clipboard to get coordinates is already implemented. But you wanted quick way and I`m not sure that current system will fit you sometimes crazy needs on 1 or max 2 clicks ...

also I wasn`t sure if current system is what you need and I also thought you already know it.

Anyway, please continue in your topic and there we may discuss if it works or if you need some improvements.

crazy needs:P ok, lets jump to the other topic.

Sorry for the show reply menion.

I often cut and paste coordinates to...

Small databases,

spreadsheets,

notes for myself or others,

sms messages,

where I want to alter the coordinates in a photos GPS tag later and want them ready to paste,

when I`m writing gps coords in a diary, etc.

There are quite a few times I use it when gpx or kml aren`t appropriate.

Anything faster than the current method would be useful for me: I currently share to a note, open the geohash link using 3g and copy it from there.

How about a "copy coords to clipboard"-function

With a mask in the config.cfg?

# clipboard mask

# default={lat},{lon}

copy_coords_to_clip_mask=mytext={lat},mytext={lon}

So a user can first set his own text form

and than he can copy the actual coords per one click on the right panel in his clipboard.

And then he can do what he want with this...

What if you need to copy to different places in different formats? Thats really irritate me that coordinates are in different formats. Google use one, opencaching use different one and so on... different people, different applications, different formats. anyway, one option is better then no options

do not know if anyone noticed this, probably not :) but in latest locus version is possible to long-click on coordinates on point dialog (dialog when you tap on any point) to copy these coordinates to clipboard. Hope it will be usable for anyone

Wow. This is amazing and I was dreaming about that feature for a long time. It is really convenient. Thanks.

If I might suggest a small upgrade of coordinates compatibility issue....

When we are adding or modifying coordinates of a point, we can choose from different WGS coordinate formats: xx°x.x` , xx.xxx , xx° x` x.x". This is perfect and is really helpful becase different devices/applications/people are using different formats, so it is easy to import them.

But it should work the same in an opposite direction. We should be able to copy them in any of these 3 main formats and also a Share point dialog should have them (instead of just "Coordinates - Plain text")

I have tried this feature and I think there is a bug.

When I try to copy GPS coordinates from one waypoint to another one, I always get the message "Invalid value":

1) Open the GPS-waypoint and copy its coordinates to "Clipboard" by long pressing the coordinates

2) Open the 2nd waypoint, click on "Select location" and press "Clipboard" -> "Invalid value"

The coordinates format looks like this: N X°X'XX.X'' , E X°X'XX.X''

Found similar big mess: V° W' N, X° Y' E is indicated as "Invalid value" - not good.

Parsing from Clipboard has to be ROBUST - it is pretty trivial to make a douzen different format work. And it needs to work WITHOUT changing a setting first!
