Possible to mute the music during navigation instructions?

Uwe Borkenau shared this question 6 years ago

Hello. I often listen to audio books at my phone during navigation. I have choose at the settings the audio channel "Music". Now the music/audio book is running quiet during the navigation instruction. But the best solution for me would be, that the audio book / music would stop (mute) during the navigation instruction and would start after the navigation instruction at the same point .

Is there any possibility?

Greats Uwe

I think the behavior, mute or pause, is a function of the audio player, not Locus Map. For example, I listen to podcasts using Podcast Player FM and it pauses whenever there's an Audio Coach announcement (or an incoming call).

In Player FM: Settings > Play Settings > Play over quick sounds from other apps = OFF

I'll admit it doesn't always pause perfectly (on rare occasions there is a tiny initial overlap) but it does pause then restart after Audio Coach's instruction finishes playing.

Hi Uwe,

Taras is right - Locus can't actively control other apps - it has just a request on the OS to weaken the level of the other app so that the navigation command can be heard. Then there are apps with dynamic playing management regarding sound requests of other apps - like the Podcast Player FM.

Hello Taras and Michal,

thanks for your answers. I have found the setting at the Podcast Player FM. But normally I use the app of my local library. It's called "Onleihe". This app has no possibility for setting. So I have to accept this small problem and now I know that I can not change it. ;-)

Not sure about Podcast Player FM, but my favourite podcast player "Podcast Addict", is able to both pause playing during notifications as well as playing local files. OTOH, I suppose it may not provide such a comfort like dedicated music player you may be used to.

Uwe, you can try asking the developer(s) of Onleihe to add the feature to a future version.

Your other option is to use another audiobook app that pauses during navigation messages. There are many Android audiobook players: https://play.google.com/store/search?q=audiobook%20player&c=apps

Hello guys,

even if I should leave this topic as is, I wants to inform that not all said here is correct. Locus correctly request so called "duck" mode when playing any notifications. This means Locus say to other currently active media players to just play their sound with lower volume. If some other apps silent voice completely, it is more a problem on their side then a required feature.

This behavior may be changed and Locus may request complete silent. My personal preferences are current "duck" as changes in background volume are not so disturbing anyway perfectly understand use case with listening books. Do you have experience from other apps that do some notifications while in foreground? Is this "duck" mode used mostly?

I can just comment my favouring Podcast Addict player behaviour at external audio focus requests, like from LocusMap. It has options to reduce volume, to pause(what I use, optionally with short rewind), or to do nothing. It as also option to pause at external permanent audio focus requests.

Understand, thanks. It looks like this app allows to ignore original suggested behavior from app ( like Locus Map ) and use users choice. Well, why not ... one app cannot in Android directly define how any music player behave, it may only recommend what to do ( Locus Map recommend to use "duck" ).

IMHO it is good to let it on the other application/user, as use cases differ ( music versus spoken word listening ). Missing 10s may matter a lot.
