Precise position selection by screen centering

I often struggle with a precise position selection by centering it on my small screen. When I detach a finger, the point often moves by several milimeters. It helps when the finger detaching is done slowly, but the effect at some level still persists.

1) Is it me who has clumsy fingers, or more users have such a problem ?

2) Is it device specific ( aside of screen size ) ? ( perhaps differences in touch screen response HW )

3) Is the processing of the finger response determined by OS, or (partially?) by LocusMap ?

4) Can LocusMap address it somehow, if applicable ?

Hello guys,

I'm playing it carefully on two devices (SGS7, SGS2) and on both I have to say that putting finger out of screen, after some movements with map, cause absolutely no unwanted movement. Yes it happen if I also move by finger little bit, but it's probably not also your case.

I believe, that also here were some improvements on Google side in new and new Android versions. What Android version are you currently using? Maybe try it on friends device with new Android, just to exclude first option.

Locus currently do no post process or optimization of these taps. Anyway it should be possible to insert some filter here, but I believe it is a problem on device level and also hard to say how many people this affect.

Maybe also consider try it on some really empty raster map, so in state when Locus needs as low amount of CPU power as possible, again just to exclude wrong code in other part of app ( like picking of items after release of finger, etc. ).

Using my finger I have a horrible time selecting where I want to.

I have found that using a stylus helps me a lot to actually pick where I want to.

Several millimeters ...

This is very relative to the zoom used.

It can be inaccurate 2-3m but also 500m, km ....

If you need exact selection, use larger zoom.

Or, set the map exactly on the cross and choose the center of the map.

If this is all insufficient, use exact coordinates ;-)

No harm done. :-P I usualy write in English for other to be able to participate.

In this context, the map accuracy does not matter, as I am concerned about the screen accuracy. I know I can use zoom and I can also manage the manual selection most of the time.

The coordinate way, if I know coordinates, is more work than dealing with the screen.

Or, set the map exactly on the cross and choose the center of the map.

This is EXACTLY what the topici is about, how to do so... :-)

Libor is it possible to record screen video? I have small Sony Xperia Z1 screen but am quite happy with position selection by dragging, and screen accuracy. I guess not 100% precise but for my purpose "good enough".

I use Sony Xperia M Dusl / Android 4.3

I have intentionally presented this as rather a funny question than as a problem. I have realised I am used to press fingers too much while dragging, if I do not pay attention. Then when lifted, the position moves 0-8 mm, probably as the centre of touch differs while the finger is being lifted.

If I think about dragging with just light touch, it moves just 0-2 mm, with average toward 0, so mostly fine.

I rather just wanted to know experience of others with heavy fingers. I take the question as answered.

Hello Libor,

I was searching for a while, if there isn't any discussion on this topic and a) I wasn't able to find correct question that should give some answers, or b) no one discuss this problem.

I'm sure this is a device-user-specific problem. If possible, it should be really interesting to try it on different device with new Android, so you may see on your own if problem is device & android version or not.
