Tracking seems to skip

i was making sure my tracking works for a vacation that's coming up. i went to a town sale and road up and down in a car and went out by foot. i was driving maybe 25mph, in straight lines for the most part.

when i checked the map, i had zig zags wherever it should have shown straight lines and turns. when i got out of the car, all the traces by foot looked accurate. which is weird because you would think its the opposite. it was working before the last update where it said something about more accurate tracking.

right now i don't know if its my program bugging out.

my phone itself, like i think i fixed the screen lock cleaning it used to do (though i did lose my gps once).

or if i programmed the settings wrong.

i use the tracking to see where i've been when photographing usually, so it needs to be pretty accurate. but right now it looks more like a heart monitor with the lines it made.

any ideas? or correct settings i can mess with?

thanks

Hi Mike,

did you switch between different track recording profiles for car and walk or did you use one profile for both activities? What settings do you have in such a profile? (time/distance frequency, AND/OR parameter, min GPS accuracy etc.). Is Locus in your mobile excluded from battery optimization? Do you use Google Services-supported localization (see settings > GPS&sensors)?

i've been using the same settings each time. though i tweaked a few since that happened.

the last time it stopped recording, the optimizer was on, i removed that.

distance intercal 33ft

time interval 4 sec

trackpoint recording condition - distance and time (both)

required gps accuracy 66ft (thought it might have been 30 something before)

record only when moving is off

record when gps is off - that's on (though i'm not sure i need it, because i think its default is off)

gps&sensors

compass was 2.2, i since changed it to 1.1 but haven't tried it yet.

true bearing is on but i have no idea what the real difference is

compatibility mode is on

disable when its hidden, is off

gps on for track recording - on

gps on for guidance - on

google services assisted location - on

i also have set

run locus as a service - on

near as i can tell it only wonked out when i got in the car and started moving again, by foot its seemed to record all of those.

in the past it would skip every now and then, but lately its been doing it more often, and the other day it was all over the place.

Hi Mike,

all settings seem to be fine, except this one:

"record when gps is off" - switch it off (maybe there's a conflict when Google assisted location is on)

Keep Locus out of battery optimization and all should be OK. Test also if it works with Google Service assistance OFF (depends on your device)

i'll give that a shot today, hoping it works... thanks

is there a way to get it to be more sensitive overall? i find the walking tracks often swing out from where i actually am. not sure if its a phone gps problem or something else. like in the past i tried to make the gps accuracy to 25ft, but now it forces me to 66ft.

that Google Service assistance where is that located? is that in the phone somewhere? or the program?

Google Service location assistance can be switched on/off in settings > GPS&sensors. It works well on some devices, on some not. On some it helps to keep Locus alive when it's running in the background (i.e. on Huawei/Honor phones). Google Services also need permission to access location so that it can "assist".

Locus takes GPS values from your device. GPS accuracy depends on many factors, including terrain or weather (more info: http://www.locusmap.eu/how-to-tackle-gps-issues/). As for track recording profiles settings, generally there's a rule - the slower the motion, the shorter should be the trackpoint distance and longer trackpoint time and vice versa. E.g. for walking use 2m and 10 secs. For car, 20 m and 2 secs.

so far so good, the settings are giving me pretty accurate results, but i do notice a heavier battery drain. can't tell if its just from the program. is there a way to make it more energy efficient but not take away from the tracking?

before i would get like 10-15% per hour, but now its more like 20-25% an hour.

Heavier battery drain with or without Google Services assistance? Google claims better battery usage with GSA on. However, as I said, it is not true on every device. Must be tested.
