Support for Galaxy Gear (Tizen OS)

jpservices01 shared this idea 8 years ago
Completed

Hi:

I am a happy user of a Galaxy Gear S2 and lover of Locus. Is their a way to bring a dashboard of Locus on the Gear? Or even get a portion on the displayed map?

When guide on or navigation is active that would be nice to be able to go without having to pull your phone out of your bag. Maybe recording a point directly from the watch would be great...

I guess this could be come something rather similar to the add on for the Sony watch.

Thanks.

Hello,

as most of you here probably already know, the add-on for Samsung Galaxy Watch and Gear watches is now available through Galaxy Apps store on your watch, so I will be closing this idea. The add-on, at least for now, behaves as a companion app and therefore requires the phone with Locus Map to be available and connected to the watch when the add-on is running. The android part of the add-on is integrated directly in Locus Map so there is no need to install anything else on your phone other than Locus Map itself.

Also there are two versions of the Locus Map Watch add-on, either Free or Pro. Their functionality is the same and they are available for free so simply install the appropriate version based on whether you are using Locus Map Free or Locus Map Pro.

If you get any communication error right after starting the add-on for the first time, please as a first thing to do, start the Locus Map on your phone and check that it is loading correctly and you can get to the main map screen. If LM is ok and there is still no connection, then try to go to the system Settings > Applications > Samsung Accessory Service and clear the data&cache for this Samsung service app. That should help.

Finally if there is any more feedback, questions, improvement tips or problems please create a new topic in Wearables category of this help desk or use our forum at forum.locusmap.eu and feel free to discuss anything about the add-on in add-ons/Locus Map Watch within discussion boards.

Also thank you all for your support, help and feedback during the realization of this add-on :)

Best regards

Milan

Same here. I am a regular user of Locus Map Pro and a simple dashboard of Locus when there is an on-going track with main information (elevation, distance, time since start) would be great!

This would come very handy and this is where a smartwatch shine. I hate having to take out my smartphone when hicking and it is not even possible when biking whereas the watch is always at my wrist.

Thank you!

Keep up with the good work!

I am also a Gear S3 owner and Locus Pro user since years and would like this feature very much!

Thanks for your excellent work on locus map!

Hi, First of all: great job on the app. I use it all the the time. love the features.

But as a sportsmen (running mostly) I was searching for a new sport(smart)watch with navigation capabilities.

Therefore I find a pity that samsung gear isn't supported, since it will probably become the most common wearable (Samsung is promoting the wearables in my country actively).

I've read you not support the OS of the samsung gears.

But I can tell you as a member of a running community, this might be the future. Because a Gear Fit 2 cost only ±€200 so a lot (and I mean a LOT) of (amateur sports) people will become potential buyers (for LM). Don't miss the that train. Other developers are catching up.

I love Locus Maps and I want to use it for running purposes. running a GPX tracks with navigation at your wrist. A dream comes true.

Thanks anyway.

One more voice for adding appl also for Samsung Gear S3 system!

I own a Gear S3 Frontier and would love to have Locus on my watch!

photo
3

Yes please!!!! Thumbs up all the way!

Gear S2/S3 DON'T HAVE A SINGLE APP available so far that can be used for waypoint navigation!

If that's not convincing enough then I don't know what is?!

I'd be willing to pay for an app that can either work with Locus android app and be standalone app on the gear itself: nothing fancy, as long as it allows recording waypoints and navigate to previously recorded/imported waypoints or tracks. If you could pre-load offline maps that would be even better but atm there's absolutely nothing allowing waypoint nation as a standalone feature on Gear watches. Tbh I bough it hoping it would have that capability so it was a bit of shock to learn that it doesn't...

photo
3

Oh my god...Locus Map on the Gear S3...THAT WOULD BE AWESOME...just a twist of the hand and a map shows me where I am. I LOOOOVE Locus Map and use it on every mountain tour all over the world. Please guys from Locus, get his thing going and enable us to leave out phones in the backpacks.

just want to keep this idea alive.

Would love to use locus map on my s3

There's absolutely nothing for the s3 and hiking besides fitness apps which are not as "geared" to hiking as locus.

Please Locus make support for S3.

Please add support for the S3 watch!!

Hopefully we will see this soon: https://twitter.com/locusmap/status/938352629066891269

That would be so great.

Unfortunately it looks more like Android wear support is coming as this http://help.locusmap.eu/topic/android-wear-support is marked as In progress and Galaxy S2/S3 is still marked as Collecting votes …

photo
3

Many applications develop extenstion for andorid wear, but tizen has a larger market share than android wear. So it must be the interest of the developers to propose extensions where there is the most user

photo
2

Good day Hean,

it does not be a must of interest! We are thinking about making add-on for a Tizen devices, but decision was not yet made. Creating Tizen based extension is a lot more complicated then creating Wear extension, so it is more about finding compromise between invested time & usage of what we create.

We'll inform in this topic, in moment we make final decision. Thanks for understanding.

photo
3

thank you for your answer I totally understand your point of view I hope you find an economical way to satisfy the Tizen users

Yes i'am waiting for this features Gear S3 also

Support for Gear S3 would be awesome...

photo
3

I also expect the LOCUS map to work on gear s3

photo

I´m also user from the locus pro since many years and very happy in using by hiking. Since one year I have a Gear S3. I´d like to use the gear with Locus. I´m looking forward for a decision for this. Thank you in advance.

photo
2

Do you think, you could get any support from Samsung? From my Point of view it would increase the usage of LOCUS and the watches from Samsung. If I would like to buy a watch, it would strongly influence my purchase decision.

photo
2

Ein Add-On für die Gear das wär der Hammer.

photo
3

I would also be very happy to have Locus Map for Samsung Gear S3. I'm using Locus map since couple of years, I also have Gear S3 since one year, and some functions like, Record track, store waypoints, map navigation, etc. would be awesome to have on my Gear. Thanks for support.

People.. use the vote button in the first post instaed of just posting text..(except if you have some more information to bring to the attention of locus staff)

photo
3

I would also love to see a tizen app/widget from Locus. Would head to purchase loads of maps straight away. as of now, there is no way to get topo maps onto tizen, so I would say the market and the demand is definitely there!

photo
2

Samsung Gear s3 is actual one of the best smartwatches in combination of civil+outdoor+sport. Please support this. Im using Locus now a long time and i'm happy also in using itg for geocaching. The connection to the smartwatch, maybe together with the android phone would be really great.

photo
4

Please add also the TAG "Samsung Gear S3".

photo
5

a combination of Samsung Gear S3 and Locus Map would be perfect. I hope that a positive decision in support of Samsung S3 Gear will soon be taken.

photo
4

Hope soo too samsung s3 and locus prefect match

photo
2

Basically the S3 is useless for me without this feature. I searched the whole net and there are many people looking for a true hiking app with maps on the gear s3. I still wonder why nobody did this.

photo
2

photo
1

I take advantage of this new comment to report to yoi an application for gear that works very well with Maps. This is smartwatchstudio's gear navigation (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=smartwatchstudios.app.com.gearfitnavigation)

We follow directly on the watch a route planned on maps. If this developer can do it you can do the same or contact this company for know-how transfer.

photo
1

Scusate ma non sono riuscito a capire se possibile visualizzare su Samsung Gear spot (tizen os) locus maps pro?

photo
2

I would love to get support for my Gear S3 Frontier! I have an app on the watch that takes the turn information from Google maps and sends it to the watch. Quite useful when walking in a different city!

My wife has Cachly on her iPhone and Cachly on her Apple Watch is very cool. I'd love to get that functionality for Locus and my Gear S3.

photo
2

Now that Samsung announced the Galaxy Watch running Tizen also, it would make sense to add support for Tizen. It's here to stay.

photo
4

Hello Jan,

thanks for the info and your interest in this topic. In fact Menion and I have been following the situation around Galaxy Watch release as there have been speculations that the new Samsung watch could be running Wear OS. But in the end and honestly not so surprisingly it will be built on Tizen 4.0 OS. So yeah, Tizen is here to stay and I will be doing some research on Tizen SDK as a result. Cannot promise anything right now though, Tizen is still a big unknown for us and is unfortunately completely different from our Android/Wear OS ecosystem.

photo
1

There are so many of us Samsung smart watch users keeping our fingers crossed for your team to successfully implement Locus Maps on Tizen!I really hope that the new Samsung Watch will motivate you guys to make our "dreams" come true. :)

photo
1

I absolutely agree. Without a hiking/mapping app, this watch is pretty much worthless to me. If Locus would support Gear, this could be a success.

photo
1

Have you looked at Map My Run in the Galaxy Apps store? That will record your hiking stats. I don't believe it provides any navigational support, though. I use the supplied Samsung Fitness app on my S3 to record my hikes while geocaching. It records the track, heart rate, altitude, speed/pace etc. and displays it on a map when finished. I had no problems running it concurrently with Locus. I exported the track as GPX and imported into Locus. But again, no navigational support while hiking.

The S3 is certainly more robust for this than my wife's Apple watch, though. On a recent 6 hour hike, we both started recording a 'Hiking' activity on our fully charged watches. The Apple Watch put out a low battery warning at about the 5 hour point. My S3 was still around 85% at that same point.

photo
1

You are right recording a hike is supported by many apps. But what I really need is an app that shows me the map with bread crumbs where I started and the pre-loaded GPX path I want to follow (with zoom in/out capabilities) and start/stop. This is really for navigation purposes. Today I have to take the phone out of the rucksack switch it on/log in and check it.

photo
1

I totally agree with Ingo. Just this last few weeks we hiked in the Harz in Germany. I had to dig up my phone every time we came to a junction. The watch app would allow me to see where I need to go. Zoom in and out rotating the bezel and swiping.

photo
1

You can use for that GPX tracker it is a gear apps on samsung store

photo
1

The GPX Tracker app seems to allow only to send tracks from the watch to the Phone. No views on the watch itself. However there is another app "GPX Route Tracker" that allows to send from the phone a GPX route to the watch (or alternatively download from the internet a GPX route directly to the watch). Have to check this further out, So far performance of this app seems pretty slow, map providers are limited to Google and Leaflet, GPX transfer is a bit cumbersome. Will test and get some feed back.

photo
2

I agree. It will only register a track and allow you to transfer it to the phone. I installed it but found it to be unreliable. In several cases the track looked like Micado....

The locus tracking function is very robust and reliable. I also love the interface with the altitude graph.

photo
1

it is gpx route tracker

photo

Locus is great for hiking, taking walks through the rough. Locus provides the maps to do so. Otherwise I could have used Tom Tom or Sygic, the latter I happen to use in my car. To give you an idea: this summer vacation I plotted a hike which took me along paths that were partially overgrown. They were on the Locus map! I would like to be able to glance at my Gear Sport to see if I have to take the next path to the left, right or straight ahead, without the need to pull my phone from my pocket.

Hi, any news? :)

Hello guys,

sorry for the delays, the beta version of the add-on is now ready for couple of weeks and its is intended to be used with current Locus Map Free (we will probably have to release LM Pro add-on separately later because of some Samsung limitations).

We have not yet managed to release it though, because we are not meeting Samsung validation requirements and each iteration of testing done by Samsung validation team takes a couple of days so that is a problem. The add-on seems to be basically OK for Gear S3 and Galaxy Watch but we have trouble on Gear S2 for some reason and it cannot be unfortunately released without full Gear S2 support. So we will be buying some used Gear S2 now to be able to continue working on the add-on which will probably lead to additional 2 weeks of delay. Sorry.

Now if you still wanted to try the add-on even in this state and you have Samsung phone with Galaxy Apps and have Galaxy Apps account (only Samsung phones paired with Samsung Watch are supported for closed beta test for some reason ) you could write me an email at milan.cejnar@asamm.com saying that you would like to test the add-on and include your Galaxy Apps account email so that I could release a beta test targeting your account directly. I would also start a new forum thread if there is anyone interested in this form of testing.

Anyway thanks for being patient, hopefully we will manage to sort out all the problems soon.

Best Regards

Milan

Hello guys,

first let me thank you for your enthusiasm and interest in this add-on and in the on-going beta testing.

For all of you I have not yet added to the beta testing please be patient for a bit since the current beta version will probably stop working with Locus Map Pro after the weekend and I'm trying to think about how to handle that assuming most of you is probably going to use it with LM Pro - I might create a new closed beta for the Locus Map Pro add-on and/or we will just finally release Locus Map Free add-on as an open beta for the public hoping that the Pro version will get validated soon after.

Meanwhile also thanks to the current testers I have managed to solve some communication problems and pass Samsung validation for Gear S2. The add-on is now also split into two independent applications for Locus Map Free and Pro. Both add-on versions will at least in the foreseeable future have the same functionality and will be available for free, this version split was only required due to Tizen platform limitations.

Anyway LM Free version of the add-on is planned to be released next week some time after the LM update which the add-on requires. I will definitely post any significant news about the release to this topic.

Hello,

beta versions of Locus Map Pro and Locus Map Free Watch add-on should now be publicly available to everyone. Please download via Galaxy Apps store on your watch.

Both add-ons are identical, just choose the correct one depending on whether you want to is it with Locus Map Free or Locus Map Pro on your phone.

Please share your feedback and report possible bugs using this thread on our forum: http://forum.locusmap.eu/index.php?topic=6397.0

Enjoy :)

Hello Jean-Marc,

just retested with my Samsung S7 and Gear S2 and (though you might see a warning message about LM initialization for a second or two after starting the add-on) it seems fine.

Do you get any specific error message or doesn't the add-on start at all? What phone and Android version do you have?

As of beta of the Samsung add-on - what kind of error message do you get?

Others have reported that with connection errors it might help to reinstall the Locus Map on your phone. Locus Map Watch (either Pro or Free depending on the Locus Map on your phone) for the Samsung watch should be freely downloadable from Galaxy Apps store on your watch.

Hello Jean-Marc,

thank you for writing the feedback. It seems extremely odd that the Free version works and the Pro doesn't. As I have posted to Peter Noll just above your post - after reproducing the steps could you please send an Android error log to me?

As for not being able to stop the application, yes the application behaves a little aggresively to keep the app alive while you are using it. But as soon as you exit the app using the Back button it should be terminated. Minimizing by Home/Menu might theoretically cause issues sometimes, but Back button should always be working to exit the app permanently. Could you confirm that you have been using Back button or is it possible that the bug only occured when manually minimizing the app by Home(Menu) button.

Hello Peter,

thank you for reporting the issue. This is really frustrating to be honest, because I have actually used Samsung S7 and Gear S3 combination to develop&test the add-on so I am not sure what could be causing this problem at the moment.

Something to try:

1) Please check your Google Play if your applications are up-to-date, especially Galaxy Wearable (Samsung Gear), Gear S plugin and Samsung Accessory Service

2) Try reinstalling Locus Map Pro and run it once after instalation

3) Keep the Locus Map running (display on, map screen) and try to start the add-on on your watch (if possible try to go to the map screen in the add-on)

4) If you get warning message and the communication is not working, please capture and Android error log on your phone (this is how) and send it to me

You could also try running LM Free and Free add-on to see if there is the same error.

Hello Milan,

in fact it's a little more complicated than I said and to be clearer I'll start again and focus only on pro version.

I worked on your recommendations to Peter. My answer in the text

Something to try:

1) Please check your Google Play if your applications are up-to-date, especially Galaxy Wearable (Samsung Gear), Gear S plugin and Samsung Accessory Service

everything I could control is good but I did not find  or I do not know what are  Gear S plugin and Samsung Accessory Service

but it seems to me that everything is good at this level because I manage to load applications on my watch very easily and all updates are made regularly

2) Try reinstalling Locus Map Pro and run it once after instalation

I uninstall both versions of Locus Watch and I reinstalled the Pro version

3) Keep the Locus Map running (display on, map screen) and try to start the add-on on your watch (if possible try to go to the map screen in the add-on)

With pro version now  I have on the watche "initialise locus and after; "no response from locul map".

4) If you get warning message and the communication is not working, please capture and Android error log on your phone (this is how) and send it to me

I installed the developer version but no bug report generated

for memory I have a gear S2 and note 5

Thank you fort you help

Hello Jean Marc,

you need to uninstall Locus Map Pro on your Android device, not on the watch.

As I did so, everything runs well.

br

Peter

photo
1

Hello guys,

Peter Noll is right, if you only uninstalled Locus Map Pro Watch, then that will not work.

Other than reinstalling Locus Map Pro on your Android phone, you can also try a second approach that should have the same effect - you can try clearing data and cache in Samsung Accessory Service (Android application) through system settings. Then you need to go to Samsung Wearables to reconnected the watch since clearing the data of Samsung Accessory Service will probably temporarily disrupt the phone-watch connection. So just reinstalling the LM Pro might be easier.

Anyway for all of you with this problem, I am sorry for the inconvenience. It should only affect LM Pro Watch add-on for those who had LM Pro 3.34.x installed and then updated to LM 3.35.x. Clean LM Pro install or the second solution mentioned above should resolve this issue permanently. We will not be unfortunately able to fix this issue in either LM Pro or Watch add-on because I have pretty much confirmed that the issue is caused by the bug in Samsung Accessory Service.

photo
1

Sorry I did not explain well, but that's exactly what I did

photo
1

Oh sorry, now I see you have actually reinstalled both the add-on and LM.

Could you please also try the second approach and on you phone go to the system Settings > Applications > Samsung Accessory Service and clear the data&cache for this Samsung service app?

If even that does not help then I would also recommend to restart both the phone and the watch. After that I am pretty much clueless and I will have to investigate further, as you seem not to be the only one with this such communication problem (even after attempting to fix/refresh Samsung Accessory Service). Gear S2 should be officially supported - tested by me and Samsung validation testers - and I see no possible problem with Note 5.

Hello,

as most of you here probably already know, the add-on for Samsung Galaxy Watch and Gear watches is now available through Galaxy Apps store on your watch, so I will be closing this idea.

Milan
