After logging the caches, some log dates are wrong

Solved

Hi,

I realized that certain my geocache logs, logged through Locus Map, have a wrong log date. Specifically, the caches I found between 00:00 and 02:00 (to 01:00 without DST I suppose, I live in GMT+2) have the date of the previous day.

I assume, that logs save internaly with UTC, which has the previous date, but they don't change the date back to my timezone when logging the cache.

I use Fieldnotes addon and I usually edit my notes and than i log them directly from the addon.

Is it the problem of Locus Map or Fieldnotes addon or Geocaching.com? How can I avoid this behaviour?

Maybe this topic helps here, but I am not sure, if it is the same problem.

Btw I am a little surprised that the Fieldnotes addon still working with the new groundspeak api. I thought because the addon is no longer supported / maintained by the developer logging with the addon is not possible anymore.

I don't think it's the same problem.

The Addon works on my device. I guess it's not affected by the Groundspeak API changes, because it apparently sends notes/logs through the Locus Map app.

Ups .... I just saw that in the newest version of Locus Pro 3.39.2 the mentioned checkbox is missing and logs always get the time of the log.

Hello Jonáši, c.s.g.,

"Log date only" checkbox was removed after quick discussion a few months ago. You are the second guy who complains about it for this reason. On the second side, there were no positive reactions that we removed it. This setting is complete nonsense because it just tries to solve the very very old issue on geocaching side which they are still unable to solve once forever.

I'll add this option back in next 3.39.3 version till we find a better approach on how to solve this.

And btw. "Field notes add-on" really log caches over Locus Map thanks to API that Locus Map provides, so this add-on is not affected by changes on Geocaching.com side.

Hi Menion,

I was one of the guys who wote for removing the checkbox and Locus "marks" always the offline log with the actual log time, i. e. 17:00, 09:30 ....

So for me there is no reason to introduce this checkbox back.

Complicated task. As I returned this checkbox back in the code, I realized that it isn't also an ideal solution.

In the end, I'm again confused about what is the ideal solution at all. Three methods how to log a cache (online log, online draft, offline) over Locus Map, extra methods how to log a cache directly on the geocaching web, the weird shift of time on geocaching web for every of mentioned methods ... stupid.

The new version is planned on Wednesday. I'm taking back my previous post. Will have to analyze this topic more next weeks. Thanks for understanding.

Hi Menion,

I understand it's complicated. It seems that this has to be fixed on the side of Groundspeak.

Thanks, Jonáš

Hi guys,

little complicated task. I'm fighting with it since I've added basic geocaching support to Locus Map app, so maybe ... hmm, 8 years?

Anyway hopefully progress. In the next Beta version 3.39.3.3 will be updated system where all logs for caches and trackable will be automatically recomputed to the timezone of cache (or left in current users timezone in case of missing related cache > in case of some trackable logs).

Needs anyway some testing.

Best to test is of course in the real, but to prevent some problems, it is possible to use in Beta version so-called "Staging server" > copy of geocaching.com for testing purpose. In Locus Map, it needs to be enabled in Expert settings > Geocaching STAGING server (at the bottom).

Thanks,

Menion

That's great news, Menion.

I'm going to try to find some time to test it.

In the meantime, I found out, that sending field notes to Geocaching site and then logging from field notes works fine. But it's a workaround. User needs to upload images or set favorite points manually.

Thanks
