Shortcuts to Legends

Lucio Dal Pan shared this idea 8 years ago
Completed

A lot of maps, vector and raster maps, filled of symbols and colours, lines and icons, that often change depending on different styles!

How can I remember all of them?

Best thing could be to have a quick way to see map legends; I could create a shortcut to images (easy to find online and download) opening in a window, for example.

It could be useful a panel for legends, similar to "Quick Settings" one: a shortcut (in the right functions panel, maybe) to "Legends panel", and there the links to legend images.

Could this be useful for other people?

Thanks for your attention

Support.

This wish is active since 11/2013 :)

It supposes that every map source, and in vector maps case also every map style, provides also page with map legend and Locus keeps track on them...

But for LocusMap own vector maps and styles, it does make sense. I have already voted before..

Regarding OpenAndroMaps, it is worthy to review the waymarking Legend of the great outdoor map style Elevate/Elements and its reference of use OSM SVG map icons.

There already is a legend, but it's not that easy to find - I always search a while for it.

A while ago we had the discussion of a small "demo vector map" that contains most/all possible elements with a name/text next to it, so displaying this vector map would be used as the legend - this legend type is available for all themes, no need to maintain one legend URL per theme, it's always up-to-date (showing the rendering of exactly the theme version I use), and it also shows the legend according to the overlays currently set in the theme. The main question was "how can we show the text?" One idea was to use a street in text shape as this they are shown by most themes. If anyone remembers where this was discussed, please link :)

It shouldn't even be a request, it's a basic feature present on every map.

As times goes by... ;)

The legend is still needed!

As desribed here - I suggest now a simple dynamic system:

: Locus should read the choosen render theme in the background

: then renders each item from the render theme as a list (and sort it in alphabetical order?) including icons and drawings

: when the user double tap on an item on the map, a small "window" like the context menu of a track should appear on the main screen and the list with the rendered items from within the render theme and description should be displayed.

: the displayed list should be scrollable and the item which was selected on the map by double tap should be placed in the middle of the "legend window". i.e. "motorway" or "T1|hiking"

: tap on the list item should show additional information if available i.e. "name" a.s.o.

: translations of the descriptions of the rendered items would be nice

This sould be a design for "all purposes" handles the legends dynamically. And its more easy than a hardcoded link to a legend or something else static.

@menion - what do you think after all this years?

Guys - vote for it!

Hello Christian,

it's a task for @Petr Voldan , he is responsible for LoMaps style and also an available legend. So Petr ...

Hello Christian,

thank you for idea. Unfortunately I'm not sure we can easily implemented it. I'll discuss with menion in next days (I think that it'll be needed to prepare some changes in the map renderer).

The aim is to include the function in LM4 in the map content panel.

I now have 2 emergency solutions:

1. Run Task in the sidebar. Then create a task in Tasker to open a file. Several can also be created.

2. With favorites, just copy the URL of the website. At OAM, I clicked the link to the legend for a long time and then copied it. The rest see instructions: https://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:functions:quick_bookmark

Then in the sidebar. But only goes online

Unfortunately legends are being discussed in (too) many different topics. For what it's worth here is a parallel discussion.

Hello,

so just for a summary of options, mainly for theme-creators.

---

Theme file:

../my_theme.xml

Legend file:

../my_theme.pdf

or

../my_theme.lnk > simple text file that may contain a path to legend. By path is currently considered an absolute path to file, a relative path within Locus directory, or URL to the web page with the legend.

Legend file may be created in more languages like ../my_theme_de.pdf , ../my_theme_sk.pdf etc.

Fact, that theme has attached legend, is visible by small green badge in the list of themes. To display a legend, long-click on certain theme.

Hi guys, I just just noticed that OAM-maps are offering a map legend. I didn't know how to display it within Locus yet, I also couldn't find an entry in Locus' manual how to open legend files. Just by googling I found this thread where Menion explains the procedure. I didn't know yet that the little green icon below the theme icon means that the theme has a legend.

So my advice:

- Please update the manual regarding display of Legends

- The same for the other entry "Validate" in this long-click menu

- Perhaps you have an idea how to make the display of the legend a little bit more intuitive. Hardly anybody will think of long-clicking the Theme's name to display a legend. Maybe with a pop-up context menu, or some info text in the "Map themes" dialog window.

Hello Sonny, I was thinking of the same > update in the list so available options are more visible. Will think about it...

It would already help a lot if it is in the manual. I find a selection menu less good. I have to make another click to get to the destination.

One could make a button with legend. This would open the legend of the currently used theme. If none is stored, a link to the manual comes.

Maybe an additional "3 point menu" like in the Map manager. People who just want to select a theme can click on the Theme's name. And people who want wo do something else regarding themes (Legend, Validate, Delete) can click onto the 3-point-menu.
