Instant map calibration from a picture

It happens quite often when travelling that you stumble upon good trail maps for the current area, either in tourist information centers or on signs at a trail head. How great would it be if I could simply snap a picture of this map and instantly use it in Locus. Of course it wont be as accurate or pixel perfect as something prepared at home, but I will be a hell of a lot better than a mostly empty openstreetmap area.

How would it work? Locus must support receiving images (jpg, png, etc) from other apps. Once it gets an image, it copies it into its maps directory and jumps into "calibration mode". Calibration mode could be done by placing a few previously-known waypoints on the correct spots in the image. Or alternatively, by rotating and x-y-zooming the (semi-transparent) image on a previously existing map of the area until it fits.

I know this has a million theoretical issues with projections/accuracy/resolution/etcpp, but these will not really matter since the area in question will be rather small.

Hi joeloc,

you mean this as a "faster" version of current on-board calibrator feature or you just don`t know that this already exists? :)

Yeah, sounds like an already exists (undocumented) feature of locus.

Functions -> Tools -> On-board map calibrator

...but i vote for this idea ;D

hm... didnt know the onboard-map-calibrator existed... shame on me :-).

i thought i had read something about it once and was searching in the obvious places in Locus (the "Maps" screen) and couldnt find anything.

Hi

I know that On bOard Map Calibrator exists :-))

I only have a problem to open an image file... when click-in on "Pick" button, it will automatically take me to Gallery (or other image manipulation software installed on computer). However, via this Gallery I have no access to all folders on the device. How to proceed if I have map images on another location (let`s say I put these image maps on a folder on my SD-card)... In the Pick function can we have a normal browse "window" (like the one used to select the folder where map files are stored).

Thanks.

Liviu

PS: sorry for lots of mails these days, I`m just trying to get used with Locus.

Liviu, this is unfortunately behavior of internal image picker.

I may suggest to use any 3rd party program that allow to pick exact image you want, like "QuickPic" or others

Once image calibrated is it possible to copy it and use it as an offline map? I have some maps which I succesfully calibrated but it would be easier to switch between them via map interface. Btw, fantastic and very user friendly function.

Hi Fero,

you can convert calibrated maps .kmz, .jp2, .tif(geotif) with Mapc2Mapc to sqlite.db for use in mapmanager of locus

It would be nice if the calibrated map could be easily dragged and combined with the recorded track. Or, select a point on the calibrated map and click the "I'm here" function, wherever the calibrated map has moved.

I very often use the function "On-board Map Calibrator" and I really miss this opportunity.

How do you clear an image map overlay? I reset the image I placed but it is still on the map

Found it - a bit hidden in the "Maps Items" Function Panel
