How can Locus display in Garmin IMG feature style properly?
Answered
Hello Locus Team,
I usually create maps with Mapwel (https://www.mapwel.net/) program. It uses 'official' Garmin feature styles and custom User defined styles. The symbol, and colors are same on desktop and on Garmin devices too.
But I realized LocusMap mixups the colors and change some styles of the original maps. Is there any list of supported stlyes wich should I use with Locus? Or how can I harmonize the appearance to the created stlyes.
Thanks for advanc!
Zsolt
Hello,
I'm sorry but the Garmin IMG maps are supported only partially in LocusMap. Especially the styles aren't supported and there are no plans for improving.
Anyway, what source data you use for the generation of IMG maps, please?
Thanks, Petr

Hello Petr,
Our organization uses Garmin devices for navigation to field survey in forests. I usually make maps for these people from ESRI Shapefiles. And somehow I realized Locus is also able to import IÍMG files. I tought I can use same IMG files in Locus in those cases when the surveyor has no Garmin device, only Smart Phone.
But If it would be an easy ways to import shape files somehow it will be good enough. Thanks

Hello Zsolt,
thank you for the explanation.
I'd suggest using our second app called LocusGIS https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=menion.android.locus.gis
LocusGIS is able to directly import SHP files, display them, edit and also export the collected data back to SHP file.
LocusGIS also supports raster .mbtiles map. So it's possible to create any map in .mbtiles format and import it into LocusGIS. See for example https://help.locusgis.com/en/support/solutions/articles/47001094929-how-to-import-geotiff-or-geopdf
Please try LocusGIS and feel free to contact me with any question
Best regards
Petr

Thanks for your answer.
Unfortunately I'd like to display the whole country forest map. In shape files it's about 650 000 records. So the mobile application don't really want to display this size of data. The Img file would be familiar because of it small size. Even on Garmin devices.
If I create .mbtiles of it, I think it will be also huge amount of tiles sets. So this format is also big.
I thought the mapsforge format would be good enough for me, to display the whole country vector shape of forest,
But the creation of mapsforge format is not so easy. What do you suggest? How can I generate small size of vector(like) maps to display in LocusMap (GIS)?
Thanks for advance!

Hi,
for the whole country...that changes the situation :) LocusGIS is not able to display all 650 000 records but I guess that you're able to import it and partially use it. There is a mechanism that prevents rendering such an amount of elements. So you have to zoom-in to see maximally about 2000 records.
Anyway, it isn't maybe an ideal situation if you require only a static map. The .mbtiles format is probably the easiest solution but it depends on what level of details (maximal zoom-level) you require. I would expect about 5 - 10 GB for the whole of Hungary in max zoom level 15 -16 (very rough estimate). Locus is able to work with such a big file, but it's maybe complicated for some maintenance, etc...
It's possible to create the Mapsforge map from SHP files but it's quite tricky. There is an old doc article how to create mapsforge map from SHPfile https://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:advanced:map_tools:conversion#convert_shp_to_mapsforge_format You can use the mapsforge format in Locus Map in Locus GIS. Mapsforge map has several benefits (small size, styling possibilities) but the generation is complicated :/
Thanks, Petr

Thanks for your long answer!
It seems I need to learn much more about Mapsforge format, and the creation of it.
I thought I can set the min, max zoom level of the layer visibility. Maybe it would be a good function in LocusGIS at layer import.
Thanks for all!
Best regards

Please check the mentioned doc article and also official mapsforge github https://github.com/mapsforge/mapsforge/blob/master/docs/Getting-Started-Map-Writer.md. There are basically tree steps:
You can influence the appearance of any layer or element using themes or the tag-conf-file.
