My question is: Are the photos that appear after selecting the "Photos from location" option in the Additional layers menu being publicly shared anywhere?

Hello,
do you mean "Geotagged photos"? These are pictures from your device, which have location included. You can then display those photos right above the places, where they were taken.
This function only displays what you have on the device. It doesn't send or sync anything, anywhere.
