'Not the right directory' error when transferring to a new phone.

Not a Problem

I followed the steps for transferring data on Android 11+ phones listed on the website. I was able to unload the data from the old phone and send the file to the new phone. However, when I attempt to load the data on the new phone, I get the error 'Not the right directory.' I am, however, able to successfully reload the data on the old phone.

I have tried:

Updating the app and re-unloading on the old phone

Moving the data folder to a different directory

Uninstalling and re-installing on the new phone.

I only have access to my old phone for a limited time, so I would appreciate a response as soon as possible.

Hi,

you wrote, "I was able to ... send the file to the new phone." Which file? When unloading the app data, the whole content of the main app directory is moved, not just one file. Please move all the unloaded files to the new phone and try it again.

As you only have access for a limited time. To be on the safe side, I would back up the entire old cell phone to an external drive or PC. I would also make a backup in the cloud. Backup manager in Locus.

I did that. When I said file, I meant folder.

In any case, I think I was able to solve the problem in a round about way. I did a normal backup and restore on the respective phones, which restored my tracks (but not points, odd, but okay). Then, I connected the old phone to a Windows PC, found the folder containing my offline maps, and copied them. I then connected my new phone and manually placed the files in the designated folder. It seems to have worked, though I haven't yet had a chance to test it properly.

A F, Could you please send a screenshot of the contents of the transferred folder? Thanks

Do you mean the one created by the unload process or the maps that I actually managed to transfer?

Better if you send one screenshot of the unloaded folder in you old phone and one of the content of the folder you transfered to the new phone.

This is the unload file generated by the old phone that could not be loaded on the new phone.

The successful transfer involved a backup file and manually moving just the folder containg my offline maps (vectormaps) from the old phone to the position indicated in the app in the new phone.

To be clear, in the successful transfer, I moved the subfolder containing only the maps, not the entire 'mapsvector' folder.

The content of the folder AFTER its transfer to the new phone should be identical to the original. Otherwise, the app will alert the 'Not the right directory' error.

Yes, I gathered that. When I was unsuccessful, I copied the files generated by the unload procedure exactly as generated. It generated the files in the screenshot, which are the same files I transferred. It did not work.

What did work was doing something completely different to what your website instructed.

You are not the only one to transfer the app data from one phone to another. If the instructions are wrong then there would be much more reports like yours. But there isn't.

Okay. All I can tell you is that following the instructions resulted in the error.

The instructions worked for reloading to the old phone, but not loading to the new one.

Could you please ZIP the transferred folder and send it to locus.map@asamm.com for a test? I'd like to investigate what in particular happened. Thanks.

I get the same error message.
I used 4.x on android 9 on a Samsung TAB ACTIVE 2 and the two big folders mapsVector and data/srtm was on a physical sdcard in the folder locus. After moving the sdcard to the new device (TAB ACTIVE 3) and installing the latest version I got asked to move my data, but when I select the folder locus on the old sdcard it first says calculating blabla and then fails with the error message as well as the first time and also, when I repeat. How to proceede?

Hi, please do the following:

1) go to settings of Locus Map on your old tablet > Backup&file system > file system manager > set custom subdirectories > set 'mapsVector' > choose "App default"

2) do the same with the 'Data/srtm' directory

3) perform app data transfer from the old tablet to another according to these instructions >>.

4) go to settings of Locus Map on your new tablet > Backup&file system > file system manager > set custom subdirectories > set 'mapsVector' directory > choose "Private folder on SD card" or "Private Android/media folder on SD card"

5) do the same with the 'Data/srtm' directory

Thanks for your fast response, but this is not good - much to complicated. I would need to move back the SDcard and jeopardize the other newly installed Apps. What is all this automatic syncing with my Gold subscription good for, when it is unable to restore my data? I copied the apps with Samsung smartswitch, I moved the external data with the sdcard. And now I should do all that manual steps including installation of everything manually? Setting the subdirectories to default will move the data into internal storage, right? But when I would have had the internal space for that, I wouldn't have moved the data to the sdcard in the first place. Why is the automatic sync and move of data to the new location (forced by Fu&$ing Google) not working?

Why can't I just connect the old and new tablet to PC and copy the folder

This PC\Galaxy Tab Active2\Tablet\Android\data\menion.android.locus\...

from the old to the new tablet, when LM is unable to?

There has been a major update of Locus Map's internal database that didn't go well in your case for some unknown reason - you reported an error message. Therefore, I proposed a complicated but correct procedure for data transfer.

"What is all this automatic syncing with my Gold subscription good for, when it is unable to restore my data?"

- only your tracks, routes and points are synced and it is unknown to me which version of database you use at the moment - the new library switch regards the cloud too

"I copied the apps with Samsung smartswitch"

- unfortunately, this doesn't work for Locus Map, especially if you use one part of the app in the internal storage and another on the SD card

"Setting the subdirectories to default will move the data into internal storage, right? But when I would have had the internal space for that, I wouldn't have moved the data to the sdcard in the first place."

- unfortunately, for a correct app data transfer, all data must be within the default app directory. The new tablet the creates new paths to the data on SD card but those must be moved within Locus Map settings of subdirectories

"Why is the automatic sync and move of data to the new location (forced by Fu&$ing Google) not working?"

- for the same reason as the Samsung switch is not working in this case.

"Why can't I just connect the old and new tablet to PC and copy the folder

This PC\Galaxy Tab Active2\Tablet\Android\data\menion.android.locus\...

from the old to the new tablet, when LM is unable to?"

- you can do this, of course, but this way you only transfer Locus Map miáin directory in the internal storage. The data on SD card might not be found by the newly installed Locus.
