Off-trail planning

Not having elevation gain and off-trail planning in the Locus Map Web is a really stupid and frustrating shortcoming - planning off-trail routes is something you do at a table, on a big screen, with the maps spread out, not on a cell phone under the sun with your finger covering half the map. And the fact that Locus Web Planner does not provide either manual mode or elevation for free-drawn lines makes it a semi-functional player in serious planning.

Locus Map Web is NOT for off-trail planning. It is good for routing along existing paths only. There is no manual draw in the Web Planner, there is no elevation if you don't use marked paths and there is no support for complex planning beyond the "tourist" spectrum.

I won't even ask why you do not have this option in the Web Planner.

Hi Luka, manual drawing is on our web planner from very beginning for years already. I am surprised you missed that. Can you please look again? Od did I understand well what are you request?

It is truth though that for segments added via manual drawing without use of routing algorithm web planner can't render altitude. That is quite challenging for us to tackle, but definitely in the plan for future development.

Hi Jan,

It turns out that the draw manually option does work after all. Following your suggestion, I tried it again and now everything functions as it should. I’m not sure why it didn’t work the previous time, it kept snapping the line back to the existing trail instead of letting me draw freely. Now it calculates the distance and behaves as expected. It’s true that there’s no elevation calculation, but I solved that by measuring with a divider on a paper map.

So, we can conclude it was just a temporary glitch. I use Brave Browser - maybe it needed an update or something else was the cause. In any case, the off-trail drawing and distance calculation are working now, the elevation remains unavailable.

It would be fantastic if, at some point automatic calculation of off-trail elevation could be added. I understand there are certain limitations and programming challenges, but if this option is introduced, it would be a great improvement.

Thanks for your reply - the issue is resolved.
