LoMaps legend explaination
Answered
1) I would like to understand the link between some categories of OpenStreetMap and map legend of LoMap Hike & bike theme.
For "Utilitary roads", this is my understanding.
- Tarmac/concrete. ?
- Gravel. [highway = track, tracktype = grade 2] ?
- Mostly compacted. [highway = track, without tracktype] and [highway = track, tracktype = grade 4] ?
- Uncompacted ?
- Path. [highway = path] ?
2) It is difficult to make graphicaly difference on the map between :
Highway - Unclassified / Residential / Service and
and
Utilitary roads - Tarmac/concrete
Hello Rafael,
thank you for quesition. I prepared the "explanation" of OSM tag directly into image:

The difference lies mainly in line thickness, and I understand it can be difficult to distinguish between them. However, the general assumption is that a track with tracktype=grade1 is quite similar in quality to a highway=unclassified or highway=service. Have you had different experiences , please?

It's clear.
I'm a young user of Locus map (and others similare applications), and found that it is diffcult to make difference between the dashes of "Mostly compacted" and "Uncompacted", on a map with the others datas like vegetations, areas, lines of altitude, on the phone screen (and even more with a nice sun).
But for me it is not a problem, because for hiking I reduce to only look for : line (Gravel), dashes and small dashes (path).

I agree with the general assumption. With my small experience it is not a problem to go safely.

I completely understand what you mean. However, the goal is not to significantly differentiate the tracktype=grade5 from other highway=tracks (grade3 or 4) . In principle, the tracks can be very similar, and it also depends greatly on the mapper's approach. Also there are situation when tracktype is not defined at all. For this reason we limited visibility of tracktype=grade5. But otherwise, it remains partially similar to other tracks.|
Thanks, Petr
