Scheduled backup running multiple time a day

Roland Gifford shared this problem 21 days ago
In Progress

I have set up a scheduled backup to run daily. It is running 5 times a day.

I will have to manually upload to Google Drive as Locus appear incapable of doing what my free SMS backup app does in that respect

Hi Roland,

could you please be more specific in describing the issue? What storage do you use for the automatic backup? Does the backup process complete each time or is each of the backups a recurring attempt that is not finished?

As for the Google Drive, we are sorry for the inconvenience but as of September 1, 2025, we have been forced to disconnect Locus Map and all of our other apps from Google Drive because we have been denied full access to the service. We are working on a solution, but it does not look like it will be over soon. However, you can access your backup/export/import via the system file manager:

47dfc5a5178db2b9765ef306a1d3f28a90deb98e960ecb1cd3482dd6e2aebf17 2d3f532a483c47f250eff428e97cdba49c9db8fdb456910b6609447c5cf2be6a

Unfortunately, it is not currently possible to set up GDrive for backup or other features, so please use Dropbox or OneDrive instead.

Best regards,

Michal, Locus team

Backup is to local storage only as you have removed the Google Drive option I used to use in addition to this. There is no indication of any backup being failed. There is no notification that a backup has taken place either.

Yesterday there were backups (based on the existence of backup files) at :
3:41
10:04
14:45
19:46
20:54

So far today there has only been one at 1:02

We'll test the issue for a few days. Please let us know if there is more than one backup in the following days. Thanks

Backup has now started backup up one per day but at very erratic times:

02:04
06:50
07:02
04:54 (which failed)

I would like the same time each day, I see no reason for the variable times. My phone is idle all the time that I'm asleep which refers to the earlier times but not the later ones which will clash with recordings when I'm travelling.

As Locus can't/won't set up read/write/delete access to a single Google Drive folder (which is all that is needed for a cloud backup) I'm needing to use another app to mirror to local backup to Google Drive. This tried to backup clashing with the backup today and is presumably the need to today's failure. I have received no notification from Locus about it and there has so far been no attempt to try again. I used to get backup notifications with the Classic Locus. My mirror software did tell me that kit had failed to mirror and did try/succeed later backing up the faulty temp file

Roland, how many complete backup files are actually created in your backup storage daily when you set up 1 backup per day? The times are not "erratic", they are random and the app chooses them when the app is not used.

The times are erratic. Random times for a daily backup makes zero sense. For a daily backup I want to choose an optimum time for that backup and for it to happen at that time every day. I then then schedule other daily events before and after that time. Locus Classic also chose a different time each day so this isn't a recent/new stupid.

One backup file per day, currently 636.8M each, I keep 7

Two backup so far today timed at 2:04 and 6:53

Two backups yesterday timed at 23:16 and 23:40

Two backups on 4th timed at 18:06 and 23:16

One backup each day on 2nd and 3rd

I can't think of anything kind to say about this

There's a new version. Try it. Delete the backup function before updating. Then set it up again in the new version.

Backup at 16:53 just after installing the new version and turning daily backup back on

Another backup at 19:52

Hopeless!!

Two so far today
1:08 and 7:10

As an aside, these backups are taking a stupidly long time to process. I know that I'm including everything in each backup and I have a lot of points and tracks but 20 minutes or thereabouts with the old version or considerably longer than that with the new version is ridiculous. I have uploaded a screenshot of my current 7 backups (covering yesterday and today rather than the week I want) to save my typing them all in

That's very annoying. Have you tried every two days? I've attached my settings, and they work very reliably.

I also make a live backup of the entire folder using DriveSync. I've excluded anything I can retrieve from elsewhere. This way, I have the backup immediately after saving the track.

I haven't tried every two days as a nightly backup to include that days tracking (and added/changed planned points) is what I want. I select to back up everything as that is simpler and allows me the option to restore everything onto my tablet. I could no doubt reduce this, accepting that the backup process is useless, but I prefer to avoid doing that. I could mirror the export folder for recorded tracks (as I export to GPX and KML after stopping recording) using DriveSync but again that is working round bad software.

A daily timed backup in the middle of the night is a basic requirement of any backup software. The locus offering has clearly been specified/written/tested/released by a bunch of folks who know nothing much about scheduled backups.

I have found part of a cause.

I decided to experiment to see if every 2 days helps, even though it isn't what I want and the settings screen says that the last successful backup was on 2nd December. Presumably every backup since then has been registered internally as a failure

A manual backup selecting everything as the auto one does completes successfully and creates a backup file the same size as the auto ones

I have changed the backup settings to be Points and Tracks only in the hope of getting a successful backup and it still fails with an output file the same size as when everything is selected

Correction to my last post, almost the same size

Selecting everything creates a 636.8M backup file

Tracks and Points only creates 635.5M

Thanks for monitoring the issue so thoroughly. We've been testing it with various devices and configurations, and we have perhaps managed to find something. What type of device and version of Android OS do you use?

Redmi Note 14 Pro

Android 15 AP3A.240905.015.A2

Xiaomi HyperOS 2.0.212.0

I changed backup settings to back up settings only - hoping that would give a successful backup to clear the error - and that failed too.

Oddly as well as telling me that last attempt is dated 9th December, it tells me the last backup was on 7th December. It has been saying 2nd December and I have no indication at all that a backup since then has been recorded as being OK
