Automatically switch between detached dashboard and map during navigation

I would like to propose a feature to improve battery life on OLED devices during navigation.

The idea is to keep a detached dashboard visible during normal riding. The dashboard could have a mostly black background and display essential information such as speed, distance to the next maneuver, remaining distance, and ETA. On OLED displays, this would significantly reduce power consumption compared to displaying the map continuously.

When approaching a navigation instruction, Locus Map would automatically switch from the detached dashboard to the map for a few seconds, allowing the rider to see the intersection or turn. After the maneuver has been completed, it would automatically switch back to the detached dashboard.

An optional setting could allow users to configure:

  • when the map is shown (e.g. 100 m before a turn or 5–10 seconds before),
  • how long it remains visible after the maneuver,
  • whether this behavior is enabled only during turn-by-turn navigation.

I believe this would be especially useful for cyclists using OLED devices, where reducing display power consumption can noticeably extend battery life without sacrificing navigation convenience.

Hi Stephan,

your idea has been partially implemented - you can set an OLED-friendly dashboard that is displayed on a detached screen. Automatic turning on the screen before intersections during navigation is also available. What is not available - automatic switch between the map screen and detached dashboard. So, here's a possible workaround until your full idea is implemented (if it gets support from other users):

1) set a OLED friendly dashboard (black background, select the option "detached screen"):

2) activate the "screen always on" in settings > display

Start voice navigation. You can swap the map and the dashboard manually:

Thanks for the hint! That's a very useful workaround.

An automatic switch between the detached dashboard and the map would still be even better, though. Hopefully, enough users will support the feature request. 😊
