Subject: Auto-start of track recording after app start fails in ~30% of launches

Hi Locus team,

I have set track recording to start automatically after app start, using my profile “Motorrad” with a 5-second countdown. In about 3 out of 10 launches, the recording does not start at all.

Setup

Locus Map version: 4.36.1

Device / Android version: Pixel9a Android 17

Auto-start profile: “Motorrad” (custom profile)

Start with countdown: 5 s

Auto-pause when not moving: enabled

Auto-start is not linked to any connected hardware/sensors, audio coach or live tracking

Locus is excluded from battery optimization, location permission is “allow all the time”

Steps:

Reboot the phone (I always do this before a ride, so Locus is cold-started)

Open Locus Map and keep it in the foreground (screen stays on, Locus keeps it awake)

Expected: Countdown appears, recording starts after 5 s.

Actual (~3 of 10 launches): Nothing happens. The countdown indicator is not shown, and the recording button stays green. Tapping it manually starts the recording normally.

Observations:

Not related to GPS fix: in successful cases, recording starts before, during or after the GPS fix (I have the GPS fix beep enabled).

Not related to the time between phone boot and opening Locus.

Once, the recording started (green notice) without the countdown indicator being shown at all.

This looks like a timing issue (race condition) during app startup: the auto-start sometimes seems to be skipped, and the countdown display and the actual start appear to be out of sync.
