Activating the display with gesture

Activating the diplay with gesture is a nice idea, but don't work very stable.

I think it is a better idea to point a doble time on the black display to activate.

It's faster and secure driving with bike.

Good day Carsten,

if there is need for an alternative solution, feel free to try one of many available applications on Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/search?q=double%20tap%20screen&c=apps . I've not tried any of them, so I have no suggestion, but I'm sure, one of them will work as expected.

means...

Gestures:

  • Disabled - screen on/off by gesture is disabled
  • Wave once - wave once in front of the device proximity sensor to turn the Locus Map screen on
  • Wave twice - wave twice in front of the device proximity sensor to turn the Locus Map screen on

...doesn't work well?

Double tap display with gloves sounds not much better :)

For your information some tests.

Alternative fine solution by app "DTSO" Gesture control.

White or black gloves ?

By the Locus Gesture control:

Is proximity sensor activated ? To test the ir proximity transmit led use second phone's cam, most have some ir sensitivity. Fine to detect the proximity ir light source, should be on continuously (= consuming some power)

Carsten - this topic has been raised a few times in help.locusmap.eu. I gave up trying to get it working with Sony Z1 even though two simple diagnostics apps could detect IR sensor no problems. Pity. Beware some of these other apps chew up battery power very quickly to perform this function - test.

Power savings. On phones where proximity switch does work (most do) there is only some minimum extra power by the proximity ir led.

This is all about LCD only, not Amoled screens.

This I have noted in tests:

Double knock or any knock on most phone screens does not work to wake up as when screen is off also the touhscreen is deactivated. Only some phones with special hardware can do. And on Samsung phone you can reactivate by the hardware home button. What are most of these promising "knock knock" screen on off apps bring ? The better apps, first bring the brightness down to the minimum allowed (25%) brightness, and then put a big 'curtain' button in front to further darken. If you look at the screenborder screen you can always see some backlight acivity shining trough. You have to push that big (curtain) button (double knock is popular) to bring you back to normal. Some of these apps only use the button curtain technique without reducing backlight to minimum 25% and so do not optimalise the minimum screen power consumption. I've seen one app that with a 'hack' that could bring the brightness down to nearly zero, but that is a dangerour setting ! What if the app hangs ? Where to push on that total black screen ? If there is no inbuilt resque system (by restarting phone a reset to 100% brightness) you're lost. Back to factory settings ? With dark screen ? Oh so very dangerous, also the reason that google standard only allows to set brightness down to 25%. Correct me if am wrong.

Hello guys,

Very nice observation Willy, thank you!

As a developer, during searching for options "how to turn on/off screen", I also read about this option - set darkness to zero and place some black layout on the screen. Partially working, but crazy.

Only solution I found and that works correctly is from my point of view this, that Locus use. So solution where app needs to obtain permission from system to be a "Device administrator" (System settings > security > device admin). Then it's possible to turn on and turn off screen directly from app code. So I only suggest - if you want to consider which app do this task correctly and which not (and least first decision which ...), check if app needs this "Device admin." access. Otherwise it will be on 99% just a black canvas, but with active backlight as 0709 was talking about. Just my two cents.

Gesture control does not seem to work when I have my Sony xz1 inside a waterproof transparent bag. I don't know what kind of sensor is being used for detection and whether the transparent plastic is blocking it. Would it be possible to have a function to detect with visible ambient light instead?

Hello Mememe,

for this featured app use "proximity sensor" which is usually located in the top-middle of your device, like it is visible for example on this picture. Sensor for light has very slow reactions and its usage for this use case may be really not reliable enough.

Hi Menion,

Yes the sensor and gesture control works when there is nothing between the hand and the phone. But when it is inside a transparent waterproof bag, the sensor will not detect. Like this kind of bag: https://klickfix.com/fileadmin/user_uploads/productimages/2717.jpg

I'm sorry Mememe, but in this case, I'm unable to help. Thanks for understanding.

I would like to recommend a feature to have the option to select alternative types of sensors for the gesture control. Because when making a longer hiking or cycling trip, the phone will be inside a waterproof transparent bag for its protection against wet weather. And this will conflict with the current way the function is operating. You would have to always remove the phone from the bag, if it does not give you access to the power button. With my bag, it is possible to press the power button through the side of the bag, but it takes 2-3 attempts before I can successfully press the button.

Understand. The advantage of the Android platform is a huge number of various application. So please check Google Play store. Maybe one of many application will fit your needs. Ambient sensor most probably can work correctly, so then some "shaking" or "double tap" may work, but for this, there definitely already exists apps on Google Play.

Hi,

i solved my problem, buying a new phone, because my Z3 crashed. One year ago.

i searched for waterprofed , a big battery and a stable one, not liked my old Sony.

With not to many app to solve my cycle- and navigation problems.

Now i have a ULEFONE ARMOR2, please don't laugh , it's the best phone i have had.

The only disadvantage is the battery temperature, last year it was very very hot in south france
