Allow distance rings to move with cursor without disabling GPS

When the GPS is enabled and position is valid, the distance rings (if visible) are always centered on the GPS position. For example:

However I would like like to be able to pan to a completely different location and have the distance rings centered over the cursor for use in measurements instead of remaining off-screen centered over the GPS position. This is currently possible if I disable the GPS, but of course re-enabling the GPS often takes considerable time so the process is too slow and tedious.

My suggestion is that when Hold Map Center is disabled the distance rings are centered over the cursor instead centered over the GPS position.

Thanks for the link Dmitry. I think having the distance ring always centered on screen is less flexible than switching "mode" based on Hold Map Center (button) but either suggestion would be an improvement over the current situation.

Good day guys,

main core of this feature is to measure distance from your current GPS position > to give you quick overview of distance to various places around during a trip.

For quick measure between various places already exists

  • bottom scale
  • quick measure feature
  • add new route & measure

Isn't this enough? I think that currently solution is logical. Rings that depends on enabled/disable hold map center function are really hard to explain to users. Rings that move with map center cross does not make sense, because you then won't be able to measure distance from current GPS location ( you move with map and rings move as well) .

So my main question: why mentioned three methods are not enough and there is need for another.

This is not a suggestion for a 4th method. It is a minor suggestion to extend the flexibility and usefulness of an existing method. The default would not alter existing behavior.

Put simply, my use-case is for a persistent, highly visible (control of text size and color) scale without needing much/ any user interaction while cycling and/or route planning. Sometimes I want to toggle visibility.

This eliminates

  • Quick Measure - requires two fingers (while cycling), distance (number) isn't persistent or highly visible.
  • Add New Route - completely wrong tool for the use-case.

I originally used the scale but gave up in preference of distance rings. I've made the text large enough to easily see while cycling. I have control over the color. I've made a suggestion elsewhere to increase the thickness of the dashed rings for better visibility over cluttered background. Visibility can be toggled from the Quick Settings panel.

If I could increase the visibility of the bottom scale (use similar settings in config.cfg for text size and color, and thickness for scale) and toggle visibility from the Quick Settings panel it may be even better than distance rings for my use-case. At present it is too small to view while cycling/ in sunshine, and if accidentally tapped the format changes. Annoying. Adding these settings would bring consistency between the two map objects.

Maybe there is another way to extend the distance rings; Hold Map Center was just one idea.

Maybe new setting "Hold Distance Ring" (yeah, not a chance I hear you say, no new settings). settings > Map > Map objects > Hold Distance Ring. Also access from Quick Settings panel. Default (as current) - rings follow GPS. Toggle - rings follow center of screen/ cursor.

Hi Menion

I use distance rings as more useful tool (compare with traditional bottom scale). I.e. would be great if will be possible to use it without additional tools and switches.

" because you then won't be able to measure distance from current GPS location " - i think that option "Line to GPS" more suitable for this, because shows the accurte distance. And if try to open a POI that is quite far from the current GPS location (a few kilometers), the distance rings may be out of the screen (depend on the zoom level)

Would be ideal to have the new setting - for giving a choice

One example

How does the existing behavior "Distance rings" functionality help to answer typical questions?:

1. What is the distance from the current location to the map center? (see screenshot please)

2. What is the distance between points A and B?
