Altitude for bridges and tunnels

Hi !

A little issue : the altitudes of bridges appears as if it was on the water level. Sometimes, it's 100 meters high... Not the same when you have to go pedalling !!! :)

Same issue for tunnels. When starting a day of cycling, we think we will face big steep roads, and finally... it goes inside the mountain. In Norway, there are thousands of tunnels (and bridges).

I'm not sure it's related to Locus, maybe more OSM... But I just wanted to warn you about that, in case you can do something.

Romain.

Hi

Locus has no idea about the type of terrain and its reality.

Maps are just images (bitmap or vector) and do not carry any altitude data. Neither OSM does I believe.

Altitude data comes only from SRTM data, courtesy of NASA and US gov, created from space radar.

I don't see any way to make this 2 of them related.

When you plan a trip and draw a route, do not place points inside the tunnels nor bridges, just entry/exit points. This should solve your issue.

Ok, I thought so.

I didn't know you could add entry/exit points on a same track. Or do I have then to do several tracks ?

But anyway, that's the point : in Norway for exemple, Ok I could zoom in to see if there's a bridge, but I don't know where are the tunnels...

Anyway, thanks for the answer !

I don't know how you are preparing your trip but I am generally creating manually a track in Locus that I will use to follow when biking. I'm doing this by using "Add new route& measure" and drawing the route point-by-point. I'm genrally using a bluetooth mouse for this as it is more precise than doing it with finger on screen.

So this is where I suggest to add points only at entry and exit of tunnels.

See the attached pictures.

Pict 1 is the process of creating the route. Each green spot is where I clicked to add a point (red ones are anchor added by Locus in order to allow to move the segments - you can ignore them).

Pict 2 is the altitude chart. You can easily see where is the tunnel. Entry point (right on map) is 386m and exit point is 399m, while the mount above goes up to ~900m.

Hope this is clear

Bon voyage !

Hi Romain,

just short answer because Barbudor already wrote everything important. Thanks for it, I wouldn't wrote it better.

Altitude data are really created based on SRTM data (there are small modification of the raw data). However there are no information about bridges or tunnels. SRTM data respects only ground level. Locus in not able to obtain proper altitude values for such tracks.

Maybe additional note to Barbudor's solution (in case that you want to use for planning the feature "Add new route and measure"). It's poor workaround for bridges: you can create own separate point in the middle of the bridge > set custom altitude (for example 50m). Finally you can plan the route via this point. It is quite stupid but maybe it'll be helpful.

Thanks for understanding

Ok. Thanks for the answers.

Actually, I can spend very little time on the route planning. I just enter the departure, and the arrival : and I let the GPS do his work. If I see something strange, I can sometime adjust the track by adding few points to force it, but not much.

We are always on the road, and except few times (like today) I don't have internet a lot.

As we plan to do 45000km... If I had to do this point by point, I would spend all my time on my phone, and I already spend a lot of time with it ! :)

Now I know how it work and that there's no simple way to avoid that.

Not a big deal !

Thanks again.

Best regards,

Romain.
