Android 10 with gestures enabled does NOT close app

I am using a Pixel 3 android phone with Android 10 and "gesture system navigation" enabled. So, there is no back button to back out and close the Locus Map app. And it appears that the app stays running (Locus icon is in notification bar) no matter what I try to get it to close. I've tried swiping up but that does not appear to work.
How do I close the Locus Map app? Thanks for your help.

with the back gesture, you should still see a toast "press back again to exit", right? So in this case, just do immediately second back-gesture to completely turn Locus Map off. Does it work?

You are exactly right! I didn't realize that a swipe from left to right was to "go back".
