Auto-waypoint?

Philip Provencher shared this idea 9 years ago

On outdoor trips I am very miserly with battery usage. Thus I do not use the tracker, because I assume that it will use the gps and thus my battery constantly. However, I do check the app periodically. Would it be possible to set the app to auto make a waypoint every time I turn the app on over a certain period? So I could set it for the trip, and then at home I can turn that off. In a way I want to lay bread crumbs without using the battery constantly.

Good day Philip,

such feature do not exists in Locus and I'm worried it will be a quite complicated. There will be need for some extra parameters, like worst possible precision of stored waypoints, max time, GPS may search for a Fix etc. So sorry, This idea is not supported by me.

Anyway I think I have a better solution for you. Worst on a battery is a screen itself, not a GPS or track recording feature in Locus. So check menu > settings > GPS > GPS Auto-off feature - http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:settings:gps_location#internal_gps_auto-off

Here you may define that GPS will be enabled only for example once per five minutes and will search for location with accuracy 20 metres. You may also define that this feature will be disable (so GPS will work as usually) when screen is on). Then you may enable track recording, define some parameters and also "max accuracy" again to 20 metres. With this settings, you will have recorded point along a track at least every 5 minutes while battery usage will be really minimal. Or at least, highly reduced. Suggest to give it a try.

Philip - I'm misery too - my solution is to have Quick Point button on the Locus screen - so I turn on display > wait for GPS to lock > tap Quick Point button to record position > turn off display. That should minimize battery for you.

Take a look at this recent & related topic too on power consumption.

why not to buy powerbank like for example 5000mAh, such thing weights 122g and lasts for hours and it's kind of cheap, like 12-15 Euros
