Can't find the search for place names in offline vector map

Wolfgang Schweitzer shared this question 9 years ago
Answered

In the past 8 weeks I used Locus free extensively for my trip to Indonesia. Thank you for providing Locus free!

Before I left, I installed the Malaysia Indonesia vector map. While the map mostly displays very nicely and shows city and road names on the map, I did not find a way to search the offline map for these names, offline.

Surely this should work, where in the UI can I find this search?

The online search wasn't always available because GSM coverage in Indonesia isn't 100%, and even where I had a signal, the internet connection didn't always work. Besides, why should I use payable online search when the searched places are in the offline vector map?

Hi Wolfgang,

offline address search in vector maps hasn't been implemented yet. Despite it doesn't look so, the displayed map data and searchable address database are two detached things. However, we're working on it intensively so the offline address search is going to be at hand quite soon. Thank you for you patience.

Thank you for the quick answer, Michal. While I find it quite strange that this functionality - which I consider quite basic - isn't there from long time ago, I appreciate that it will become available soon. Can you give me an idea how soon?

It surprises me that displayed map data and searchable address database are 2 detached things (in a vector map!). How do you - or the people who actually make the maps - make sure that there are no descrepancies between the 2?

While Locus Map application exists quite a long time, Locus Map autonomous data - LoMaps, POI database etc. are still a quite new thing and is being under extensive development. Despite the fact that the OSM base is common for all these data, Locus Map has used and downloaded only part of it - map data and POIs. Address database is another huge part which implementation and possibility to download for offline use requires a lot of work yet.

o.k., thanks again, Michal.

Any news if/when this feature will be available. I think, it would be a cool functionality for us all - I'd even pay for it, when implemented as an add-on for Locus...

Hi Michael, we're very close to some reasonable solution. Just wait for the next Locus version ;)

Michal, sounds fine, I will definitely wait

Hi Michal,

I found a post regarding a new feature of searching in an offline database for a specific address in Locus (http://forum.locusmap.eu/index.php?topic=5016.0).

While this works - I hope this is not what you were referring to in your above post... What I am looking for is a search in the currently loaded vector map for a (sub-) sting of any area/hill/poi/site that is already part of the currently loaded map together with coordinates.

Regards,

Al.

Hi Al,

we're preparing offline search of addresses, not any area/hill/poi/site - such a database would be excessively huge and would fill too much space in the device memory.

Hi Al,

There is already offline POI search (has been displayed as "beta" for a long time). Maybe that helps you?

Michal, this is not about a new gigantic DB, this is rather about brute force search INSIDE the LOADED .map file.

Hello Michael, search if .map file - if you reference to a quite new feature that mapsForge library implements, this is not used in Locus and offline search we will offer soon won't depend on it. This new feature is really really limited and with current map format, it may never offer such results as our new solution.

I bought the Locus Pro Version now and installed the Bayern DB as described here. I also have the Bayern map on my device.

However it doesn't seem to work, and I can't report any findings in the other thread as I can't seem to log in there. That seems really odd as I AM LOGGED IN, as you can see by my post here. What's wrong here???

Hello,

please verify:

- both files are stored in same vector map folder

- naming of your files: bayern.osm.db and bayern.osm.map

top right in search dialog, click on "hamburger button" and select "search offline" and next use bayern

Thanks for the hint, for a reason that I don't know the bayern.map was directly in the vectormaps folder, and had the name bayern.map, while the db was in .../europe/germany.

Since it was already 2 years old I now downloaded the latest bayern map from openandromaps now, renamed it to bayern.osm.map, and placed it in the folder on the phone where the db is.

Now searching for Points of Interest (beta) works.

hi gentlemen,

firstly, thank you balloni55 for the help... We are releasing a new version fully supporting Worldwide offline address search within a week or so. No temporary-solution procedures will be necessary then. Please be patient.

I am using Locus Map Pro 3.24.3 and I can't find the option for an offline search (I'm sure my the OSM map that I am using contains that information)

Good day Hans,

by "can't find" it means that you are unable to locate place where to search for offline address ( it's in menu > more > search > offline address in top menu ) or your country does not appear in list for offline search? If second option is a problem, what is source of your map and it's age? Also you may display detail information by long click on map in list of maps to display it's details and to see if map has support for LoPoints and offline address search.

Hi Menion,

Does this search only support Lomaps?

I also downloaded this map:

https://www.openandromaps.org/en/downloads/asia-middle-east

Locus can't seem to search for these maps, can you confirm this issue?

Many thanks.

OAM provides Locus compatible POI databases (.db files), but they do not contain address data.

Mapsforge vector maps (.map files) do contain street names etc. for DISPLAY purposes, but the data strucutre does not work for searches.

I am using OAM all the time, but for offline search I have installed the LoMaps for areas of interest in addition.

Cheers

Hi Michael,

Sorry, this is a later thanks. Thank you very much for your help. I read your introduction carefully, and I found that Lomaps so good.

.db files does not contain address data....I don't know if Locus is willing to support any text search, not to limit the address search?

I also feel that you are very professional, BTW, do you know OsmAnd ? URL is http://osmand.net

This software looks very professional like Locus. Of course, I have not planned to replace, I am just curious Locus and OsmAnd seem to be very like, do you know their relationship?

There is no relation between Locus Map producers and OsmAnd. Search in the app is under heavy development now, much will be available for the next season 2022.
