It would be a nice idea to be able to change the folder icon where I store my poi instead of just having a black folder icon

may you please post a screenshot so we talk about same option? Because icon for common folders of Locus database may be already changed: http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:points:management#data_manager > Edit button in menu of every folder.
