Date of field notes differs after uploading to geocaching.com

Solved

I am not sure if this is a problem of Locus or GC.com. I already heared about that problem, but know I run into it by myself.

In field notes addon, date and time of the log is: 13.11.2016 22:50

If I export it to fieldnotes.txt it shows: 2016-11-13T21:50Z

And if I upload the fieldnote to gc.com it shows: 14.11.2016 06:50

I am very confused here in germany (UTC+01:00).

Hello guys,

I'm testing this issue more precisely. Since Locus use Geocaching API, there are problems with times. If I remember correctly, upload from Locus Map directly or over text file, gave same results. It looks like it's not true anymore. I'll fix this problem to next version. Thanks mainly @big for a help and precise description on forum.

Let me know, if in next Locus Map version will still be any issue, thanks!

Good day Kai Sen,

I've explained this problem already few times, but I'll try to summarize it here.

In methods that geocaching.com provide to developers and users is huge inconsistency. This is main problem here.

  • time values in fieldnotes.txt files needs to be in UTC+0 time, so time in Great Britain time zone
  • time on geocaching.com is anyway in Pacific time, so it's UTC-8 !!

Because of this in Locus exists two methods how to log a cache. In "log a cache" screen may be defined time and below is option "Log date only".

  • if you care only about correct time on geocaching.com and wants to have same results from Locus as well as from logging directly on geocaching.com web page, enable this "log date only".
  • if you care about precise log time (usually for some statistics in applications like geoget etc.) disable this option

Exact log time may be checked if you on web page of certain cache press "Download as GPX" button. In downloaded GPX may be found your log with precise time that has geocaching.com stored in database.

Hope my answer helped you, otherwise feel free to ask.

dear Kai Sen,

I have the same problem with uploading directly by addon as fieldnotes to GC.com. Time is interpreted same as server time - not my local time. But log times in addon and fieldsnote.txt are same. If I use share to - safe do GoogleDrive and I manualy upload file on fieldnotes page at GC.com site then times are correct.

Hi,

I did the same test as well: uploading of a saved fieldnotes.txt file with UTC+0 times works perfect.

But uploading these fieldnotes with the fieldnotes plugin doe not work, even for the same log.

The times can be easily checked on the fieldnotes page on GC.com.

What puzzles me is the fact, that it stopped working about 4 weeks ago, without any update of Locus. Can it be that GC.com updated their API?

Cheers!

PS: maybe we can pick up the discussion from here: http://forum.locusmap.eu/index.php?topic=5467.0

Thanks for your help. For now I changed the timezone at geocaching.com to -7h with the result that the timestamp of my uploaded fieldnotes is okay.
