Different coordinates with photo-point: jpg-metadata vs. gpx.file

Michael Klingler shared this problem 5 years ago
Not a Problem

Dear all,

after importing jpgs (data management tools - geo tagged photos to points) and gpx.files (from GPS - GPX to features) to ArcGIS, all points created do not have the same location (this becomes obvious if you zoom in).

Do you have any idea, how to resolve this problem?

Thank you!

Kind regards,

Michael

Hello Michael

please share us a small example as file/screenshot/screencast for better understanding.

thanks

Hi Wolfgang,

please find attached a screenshot from Arcmap. The green point results from the locus export of the "photo-point" as gpx.file and the following import to Arcmap (command: GPX to Features). The blue point results from the import of the enclosed attachments (JPGs) to Arcmap (command: GeoTagged Photos to Points). As you can see, both points are not located at the same position.

Do you have any idea, how to resolve this problem? Thank you!

Hello Michael,

to better understand ...

Coordinates of a point in GPX file differ from coordinates stored in JPG file for 20 cm, right?

If above is correct: I'm checking the app source code and at the moment, you create a new point, it gets current GPS coordinates. Anyway, how the app should say a moment when you took a photo? Because it may take quite a while till photo on camera is confirmed and send back to Locus Map. App set the coordinates to photo at the moment, it is confirmed so it may do this small difference I think.

Solution? Is it really a problem? The app should set to photo current defined coordinates of the point, but is it correct? Probably not.

Hi Menion,

during our fieldstay we usually save localizations within Locus with the function "Photo-points" but sometimes, if photos are not appropriate, with "New points". That said, we collect a lot of points without photos or JPG.metadata. I am wondering which method is more accurate. In my opionion it does not make any sense to use the function "Photo-points" if it eventually leads to unequal corrdinates.

thank you!

Hello Michael,

understand. You may help me to do a proper decision anyway as I wrote before ... "Is it really a problem?"

In the moment you click on "create point" button, current coordinates will be used, this makes sense right? Then coordinates of points in GPX should be always coordinated you really want.

Anyway, if you then add a photo to point, every photo will have own coordinates from the closest (time) possible moment to moment you took a photo. Which makes to me a sense as well.

So I really do not know how to help here. Anyway if you know what coordinates in point & photo mean (moment they belong to), I'm sure you may use them as you need.

Menion
