Distance error of recorded track exported to Google Earth over GPX
Not a Problem
My tracklog recorded in Locus shows 16.72 km and then after exported to GPX, Google Earth shows 20.70 km. Why this difference?
Also, in this day I hiked with 2 friends and their garmin devices showed about 3 km of difference higher. Any help please.
Moto Z3 play and Locus 3.38.4
Hi Ricardo,
could you please post GPX of your track for testing? Thanks
Michal

Hi Michael,
Sure, GPX file is attached. Locus shows 16,72 km and GE shows 20,70 km. I didn`t export in KML because GE doesn`t show any measurement data with KML files generated by Locus. Is it normal?
Thank you,

Hi Ricardo,
I tested your GPX in GE and it shows length 16.7:
Then I tested it in the GPSvisualizer and the result is the same:
So, your observation seems to me like a little mystery.
I'm sorry, if I can't simulate the problem, I can't help with it.

Hi Michael,
I don`t know how you got that window in GE, please tell me how to do it. Well, the simplest way to find the measurement of a treck in GE is right click then Properties. See image attached. Also, my 2 friends with garmin devices showed a 3km of difference??
Sorry, but still something wrong

Thanks Menion for your help,
I also get 16,7 km with Display Elevation info, so there is a discrepancy in GE. I also opened this tracklog with other apps to find what they print. Most print 16,70 km but GE (partially) and TrackMaker print 20,70km. So, it seems there is a difference between them how distance is measured. Weird!
Anyway, I would like to point this conversation to the difference between Locus and Garmin devices. As I wrote, Locus printed 16,7 km and 2 Garmin devices printed 19,8 km. So we have here a difference of 3km, which is huge. I had difficult to defend Locus precision vs Garmin with my friends.

Understand. Difference 20% is huge and there definitely have to be some reason for this.
Do you know the real distance of your route? Are you also able to get GPX of recorded track from any Garmin device, that displays even in Google Earth 20km?

My friend sent me his GPX file, it is attached below. His tracklog is much detailed, with more resolution than mine and caused this difference. My phone`s GPS settings is set to precise and Locus settings is default.

Hello Ricardo,
thanks for your screenshot of settings and mainly GPX track. It makes sense now ...
Check to compare of your (red) and Garmin (blue) tracks in Locus Map and mainly compare with bottom 100m scale. Seems that Garmin is really "jumpy" and record point every meter. The result is a 20% increase in distance compared to more smooth values in Locus Map, surprising.
To achieve a similar result with Locus Map, you need to modify recording time and distance interval in your recording profile. In best, set there 1 meter and 1 second, minimal values. Hope it makes sense to you.
