Downloading offline maps taking forever, then getting "unexpected end of stream" error

Peer Böhm shared this problem 7 years ago
Solved

I have bought and installed Locus pro on a Samsung Galaxy S7 and am now trying to download the three included offline maps. One has finally downloaded (Germany, Niedersachsen) but it took many hours. Often, the download would not progress for hours.

Now I am trying to get Nordrhein-Westphalen and Hessen. It downloads to something around maybe 30, 40%, then doesn't move for hours. Then either nothing happens anymore, or I get an "unexpected end of stream" error.

How can I get to the included offline maps, and possibly to more maps that I intend to buy later?

Btw., my internet connection works just fine (with any other stuff), so does the Wifi in the house. There are no major other downloads or any other significant load on either the internet connection or the Wifi.

How can I get to my offline maps?

Dear Peer,

I'm sorry for troubles. Honestly it's quite strange issue. Would you please try (in first step) to restart your phone and after that download map again?

Thank you

Best regards

Petr

Hello Petr,

meanwhile, during a couple of hours yesterday, I could download a couple of maps from the store. Then it shut down again, and it's still shut down at the moment. Sometimes I can't even reach the map store at all, and everything on this end here indicates, that the map store might be down.

In those times, when download is possible, the download speed is reasonable for the internet connection I have here.

It either works quite ok (rarely) or else not at all.

Yes, I had already tried all kinds of things, including stopping and starting the service on the phone, rebooting the phone, checking connectivity from the network here, restarting local networking hard- and software.

Apparently, I also have to restart the whole application for the maps, that I did manage to download, to show up in the application. Knowing this now, it is manageable, but maybe something to look into for the next bugfix update.

Right now I am waiting (for the whole day) to download two more maps, that are in the queue.

It is my hope, that I will eventually be able to obtain all the maps I would like to have with this application. That's why I bought it (yes, I have the pro version). At the moment, I must say it doesn't exactly make be happy.

Thanks for your time, though. I mean that. :)

Regards,

Peer Böhm

Dear Peer,

I'm sorry for late response. That's quite complicated: we can not probably simulate the issue. Locus store and storage for map files are hosted on Google's cloud servers. We newer had problems with speed, latency, etc.

Would you please check if the default Locus working directory is located in internal memory? The path for Locus folder is written in Menu > About app > About app. Send me also the version of your android system.

Thank you

Best regards

Dear Peer,

I've discussed your issue with the main developer and we aren't able to find any reason why it should happen. There has to be some problem with your device, internet connection, storage. But you have quite new powerful device, so it's really strange.

Let me know if you have still problem to download some map I'll prepare for you a custom link for manual downloading. You can download map manually to the PC and than copy it to the device.

I'm sorry for troubles but I don't have any general solution for you.

Thank you for understanding

Best regards

Petr

I also have this problem when downloading openadromaps and openmaps on my Oukitel 6000 Pro device

Also On my Samsung galaxy S8 I have a similar problem when downloading the same maps and Elevate LE theme..Very very slow after 92% till 100 %. Maybe the problem is with extracting part.. But at least on S8 it finishes after 1-2 hours :)

Good day Marius,

not sure if this is same issue as Johannes has. In this case, it is something I'm aware of. Issue is in attached map theme that is in OpenAndroMaps and in case, you have defined custom directory for mapsVector on SD card, result of extraction is this slow process. Issue is caused by new system introduced in Android 5 for writing on external SD card.

For now I have no better solution, but I'm aware that is needs some hack to make it work faster. Sorry for now!

Could I ask you for more info, please?

  • can you see some progress in downloading bar? Or does remain the downloading on 0% ?
  • do you use external SDcard on your device
  • do you use some firewall app or some app that could effect the network communication?

Thanks, Petr

I have nearly the same problem. Using latest version. I noticed my 3 offline maps (LoMap Belgium, Germany North and Germany South) suddenly were listed twice in "Maps". Same version, same folder (on sd card). So I deleted the duplicated entries. Result: Maps are gone. So I go to the Store in order to re-download them. Always at 50%, LoMap Belgium download stops with unexpected error. Also the download of the 2 Germany LoMaps maps stops with unexpected errors after some time.

EDIT to my previous message: Restarting the phone partially seems to solve the problem. It seems before the restart the maps were downloaded (= till 50% indication) but not extracted.

Now I could download/install LoMap Belgium and Germany South, but Germany North still has the same problem (download till 50% indication, but then there is no extraction, "unexpected error".

It seems that there is some issue when downloaded file should be unpacked (map is downloaded as .zip file). Would you please create the debug log for us? How to create it is describe at https://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:faq:how_to_create_debug_log. Please download Germany North map, wait for error and then collect the log via Android settings as described in the article.

Thank you, Petr

ok, I just sent the log, hope it helps

BTW, each of the 2 (re-)installed LoMaps are shown twice (duplicated) again in "Maps".

thank you for the log file, we'll check it. Regarding duplicated maps - it's very likely caused by settings for external maps. Please open Menu - Maps - Offline - tap on the blue PLUS button - External maps - remove duplicated folder (if any)

Thanks a lot. I tried, but it appears this goes beyond my understanding of Android file paths and the way Locus is handling them. The more I press the + button there, the more confusing it becomes :-( I don't understand these panels any more. I'm starting to think: Wouldn't it be better for me to delete the app and reinstall it from scratch?

EDIT: It seems I have no other option any more than deleting and reinstalling the whole app. Because everything is failing now:

First, now I noticed suddenly Germany North LoMap is not listed any more in your store as a map I already bought. Phone restart, no cure. So I bought it again and downloaded it. It downloaded and refused to extract (again).

Phone restart again.

Now I used the link you provided to download this map manually. I copied the 2 extracted files of Germany North LoMap into the directory where Germany South and Belgium LoMaps are situated. Then, for some minutes, first it seemed everything works fine again, although I noticed rather slow performance, very unusual for LocusMap. Then it crashed. I sent the crash report to you. After this, offline maps did not show up again. So the app is unusable now for me :-( Tomorrow I will delete it and try to reinstall it from scratch, unnless you have another suggestion. Phew.
