Enable customization of "distance rings"

Hi everyone,
I always use the distance rings that are drawn around the center of the map. For some maps these rings can be a bit too thick and distract from the map content.
I would like to change the style of the rings. At the moment these rings are shown as dashed double lines.
For example I would like to show only one line per ring and reduce the thickness and maybe the color.
I like this idea 
The colours are already easy enough to change. see config.cfg
map_items_distance_rings_font_size=20.0

Thank you very much for the hint - this allows me to modify the rings as desired.
