Error 3 when downloading USGS maps

David Chirnside shared this problem 7 years ago
Not a Problem

Hi,

I just bought the Locus Pro to use for offline navigation in the US.

I have downloaded a gpx file into it of my track (4,500km).

I am not trying to download the USGS maps using the follow track option at 60 miles, and I am getting an error message:

Error: 3

Process unsuccessful

Problem with map tiles downloading.

Please check internet connection and free space in memory and try again!

The internet connection is fine and so is the memory.

Please advise ASAP as I depart in a week and would like to have this solved. Note: I live in Prague, so can even bring the phone to your office.

Regards,

David

Good day David,

thank you contacting us and sorry for a complications.

I'll have to once invest more time into better description of problems instead of nothing-saying error numbers, like in this case.

Error 3 means "timeout". This error in most cases happen in case, target server is no fast enough to respond in defined 60 seconds. Most servers usually respond within a few seconds, so no response in 60 seconds means really a problem on server.

I'm personally aware that USGS servers are really slow. We ware talking about this with colleagues, but unfortunately technology that USGS use (WMS) for last zoom level is generally wrong for mass downloading so we are currently not able to provide better solution.

Thank you also for an offer of visit in Prague, but as I wrote, this is a problem in performance of USGS server, not Locus directly.

If you have any tip for any alternative map server, you should write us it. We may try to contact them and negotiate some conditions.

Thank you for understanding.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

Would the pdf maps be a better option to download do you think?

Hello David,

I'm not sure how easy is to use PDF maps in Locus (mainly don't know how to easily convert them to be true).

Anyway I've added to this topic my colleague Petr, who is our expert on maps & stuff around maps. I'm sure he will find some suggestions or some unknown information ( like new maps for USA? ) for us in Monday.

EDIT: btw. I was testing a while these USGS maps and last level 16 - I have to agree that this is really really bad ( in terms of speed ).

Hello David,

I found this quite old topic. As I know the USGS releases maps also in geopdf format. Locus can not load this geopdf but it seems that for example mapc2mapc SW can convert it into Locus internal sqlitedb format. Please see:

http://www.the-thorns.org.uk/mapping/help/locus.html

http://www.the-thorns.org.uk/mapping/help/geopdf.html

In case that you're familiar with CMD you can use GDAL to directly convert the map. http://www.gdal.org

I didn't try but following command should convert geopdf to mbtiles format that can be loaded by Locus:

gdal_translate -of MBTILES map.geopdf map.mbtiles

Best regards

Petr
