exif tags for screenshots

joeloc shared this idea 11 years ago
Completed

During my trips, I share plenty photos with my readers and also a few Locus screen shots here and there. It would be nice if those screen shots would have a DATE-PICTURE-TAKEN exif tag. If you have a current GPS position, you might want to add that as well.

This would allow proper geolocalisation, putting images on maps, sorting them in galleries, etcpp. A file creation date is not enough, it`s simply lost too quickly.

Hmm, as I look into code, when you take picture with enabled GPS, then photo should contain time and also location. Did you checked this?

It`s logical that I could set time even if GPS is off, so I`ll change this

EDIT: ah I see, that I put into EXIT wrong time value. Fixed now, so check please next version. Time should be there everytime, GPS location only when you have enabled GPS

picture? photo? we are still talking about screen shots here are we? not something that i do with the camera, but the thing that you create from the map screen with send... screenshot...

oh... i am just seeing... this is a PNG! damn... i doubt PNGs can have exif tags.

maybe you can make an option to save screenshots also as geotagged geotiffs?

I`m sorry but as I know, Java have problems with TIFF images at all, mainly on Android devices

It`s maybe a little bit off-topic like, but talking about EXIF tags, it would be of great help for later "offline"-home usage, if there were the "Compass" VIEWING ANGLE in the photo, too. I don`t now whether this is something you are able to influence or whether it`s up to the photo app. If you cannot do anything about it, does at least someone know, whether such a photo app is available (HTC One X genuine app does not do it).

EDIT: It may also be well of help while on the go, in order to identify certain locations easier.

Ii think this could be great feature in Locus. imagine: you are taking a photo, photo knows in what direction it was taken, and Locus is using this info and it shows that on the map in form of triangle (similar to "Show view" feature)

jtkorken: is "VIEWING ANGLE" some official tag used in EXIF information?

Hello Menion,

it looks like to be official tag:

GPSImgDirection (what i called "VIEWING ANGLE")

Indicates the direction of the image when it was captured. The range of values is from 0.00 to 359.99.

Tag = 17 (11.H)

Type = RATIONAL

Count = 1

Default = none

For example my Sony DSC-HX7V writes it nicely to the EXIF-Header, my Motorola Defy as well as HTC One X don`t :-(. Nice Tool to look at and edit is GeoSetter / Exif Tool. If you need example photo (s), let me know.

Hello Menion,

Any news about this topic?

not yet ...

are we talking just about taking photos to waypoints directly from Locus right?

Right!

hmm I`m looking at it and it`s not so simple to handle.

When you tap on "TAKE PHOTO", it take some time, till photo is stored on card and then this information come back to Locus. Meanwhile you may move with your phone freely so in time, Locus receive location, bearing should be completely different.

So I think, such feature should be supported directly by application that takes photos. Location is not a problem, that`s clear, but orientation during taking photo problem is

There are always ways, I may record orientations for around last 3-5 sec before Locus receive photo and then compute most used one etc ... but that`s quite a lot of work and not much precise result ...

Hello Menion,

You know what, this is exactly the answer I expected...and is obviously the only good one :) What a pitty. You are absolutely right it needs to be on the photo app...but WHICH ONE does it?

photo

hmm I don`t know ... to be true, I never much used photo in phone, so I`m worried you have to test a little

What is the resolution of the timestamp in the EXIF-Data?

Locus could record pairs of timestamp and orientation during taking of the foto and then use the orientation of the pair with the same timestamp as in the EXIF.
