Export as KML not KMZ for photo waypoints

Shane Wellendorf shared this problem 11 years ago
Solved

After a recent update, now when I export photo waypoints it exports it as a KMZ. It does this regardless if the pack as KMZ button is selected. Prior to this update, sometime in July, when I exported a group of photo waypoints it converted them to a single KML and included a folder with all the associated photos. I could then transfer everything to my computer and the photo links worked in Google Earth. I would like to figure out how change my Locus back to this export format. Any guidance?

This is great app and I use it regularly. Thanks.

Hello !

Just to add something.

With the 2.7.0, as said by Shane, we had KMZ. When i opened the KMZ with GE and clicked on the waypoint, i had the description including little thumbnails of the photos.

But, when i cliked on the thumbnails, nothing happens. I couldnt get the pictures to be opened to a normal size.

I thought it was a kind of bug that would be probably solved soon ...

With the 2.7.1, the picture are not more exported with KMZ file.

It`s a pity ! :-(

What`s going on ?

Hi,

I`m quite surprised that this worked before. As I see in code, there is forced export as KMZ. Weird ... anyway fixed and should be fine in next version

about attached and not visible photos: you need to enable "Export generated description" because photos are in Google Earth visible through html description that locus generate.

Hi Menion,

I`ve just tried, both options, without and with the option "export generated description", the photo is no more attached to the KMZ.

By the past, the photo was in the "files" folder into the KMZ, but as i said, i could`nt open the picture by clicking on the tumbnails with the GE on my computer (i`ve tried on Ubuntu GE and Windows 7 GE, just in case).

Now, into the KMZ, in any case i tried, the "files" folder still empty.

hmm ..

photo is visible when you tap on point in Locus right? May you try to attach any other photo into some point and export it (with generated description). Just if there isn`t any problem during a conversion. Because when I on my device edit point, add photo from galery and then export it, point is also with photo and no problems in google earth

I took a new point to which i added a photo. I exported it and i effectively have the photo in the folder "files" into the KMZ. Cool ! So as you Said it was probably a conversion problem.

When i open it with GE on my computer, i have the description as you can see on the following picture. When i do a left click on the thumbnail, nothing happens. When i do a right click on the thumbnail, i have a menu with : Open link - Open in new window - Save link - Copy link - Open image - Save image - Copy image - Inspect.

Whichever option i click, nothing happens.

I imagine that normally i should have a new window opened with the photo at his normal size displayed on the screen, no ?

23:30 now in New Cal, time to go sleeping - Thanks again Menion - See you !

hmm I`m fighting with it now. I`m sure it worked in such way and I also don`t changed anything about it last months ..

it`s just about correct definition in exported description. When you rename exported KMZ into ZIP and extract, you`ll see kml file with one point and html description. Seems that Google Earth have some problems with relative path to file

EDIT: firstly I found that google earth do not display images that ends with uppercased name ... so image.JPG not work, image.jpg do ... fixed now

secondly, I think it`s problem of KMZ package. Google Earth do not want to handle it. If I anyway export point as KML with description and open it, images are loaded correctly ...

Hi Menion,

I searched a long time in the web some answers to the problem.

The only thing I could find on the subject is that it seems that others have the same problem and the conclusion is that this is a bug in GE (I even tried with last beta version of GE).

As you can see into the discussion on the subject in the link below, what is suggested is to offer a ZIP rather than a KMZ to the user.

Link : http://code.google.com/p/kml-samples/...

In addition :

I found that in another link about GE that explained me why i couldn`t get anything happened with a KML when i clicked on the thumbnail :

----------------

"First you need to manually enable to allow GE to access local files -- security feature.

Tools/Options/General/[x] Allow access to local files and personal data"

-----------------

Google earth does not indicate anything about the subject when you click on the thumbnail and when the option is not checked.

Suggestion : Because of this lack of information from GE, maybe it could be useful from Locus to inform the user somewhere ...?

hm

"Tools/Options/General/[x] Allow access to local files and personal data"

doesnt help.

i have create some testfiles (kmz) today and GE do not open the pictures..

hmm I was also searching for some time and also without success. So suggestion is to do not use KMZ with images or then simply extract KMZ to normal folder

anyway, reported problem is solved
