Extend battery capacity by improved map display

Hello,

I am using Locus Pro for biking, and it is the best navigation and routing app, I know.

Main problem I have - as with other similar apps - is battery lifetime.

I experienced, that with GPS on and display off, the battery lasts 50% longer, than with display on.

My idea is:

- A battery safing mode, where after some seconds, the map display in the background is switched off

- So we have in this mode a black display with all text informations (speed, altitude,....) still on.

- Additionally your own position on the track is shown as a white spline on the dark background

- In this mode, you always know, if you are on track, but do not waste power by the bright map in the background

- By touch of the screen, the map would be switched on again for some seconds

This should extend battery lifetime by 30-50%

Hope you like this idea

Good day Christopher,

interesting idea, but are you sure that dark background helps in this case? It has an effect only on "Amoled" based displays and even there, effect is not so huge. I may anyway only confirm that display is the first candidate on biggest battery-eater. Because of this, Locus offer few methods how to use display as less as possible.

Please check mainly screen on-off control , that helps a lot as it allows to turn on screen only when needed.

You may also try to enable black "blank map" (from toolbar of Map manager), maybe you notice some effect on battery.

Also to be sure you are on the track, there are two types of notification. You may read about it in "Guidance along track" and "Navigation long track" sections : http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:tracks .

Hope I helped you little bit. I believe that screen turned off is a lot better battery saver then screen with black map.

I've done lots of testing trying to save bits of battery here and there. I agree with Menion. At least on my Sony Xperia I don't think a black screen makes any difference. Best is to keep screen off as much as possible, then have display on for quite short time during navigation instructions, for example I set config.cfg navigation_announcements_times=20.
