Geocaching: Caches stored in the folder structure slow down other phone tasks

popescu shared this problem 10 years ago
Solved

I've noticed that Locus (or the Geocaching addon) creates this crazy folder structure in Locus/data/geocaching. There are two layers of folders, each named 0-Z and they corespond to the last two characters in the GC code of the respective cache. At the end of this folder labyrinth you can see files called "images.html".

I have 2673 folders like this on my SD card. Every time I want to compute the sizes of files on my SD card or every time I search for a file there, my file manager has to scan this 2673 folders and it takes ages. Backups are slowed down as well.

It's interesting that not every cache I have in Locus has its own "images.html" file stored in this structure.

What creates this structure? What are the html files good for? Can I delete it without losing any important data in my offline stored caches?

Could this data be stored in a few files in a form of a database instead of thousands of folders and single "images.html" files?

Hello,

there are two ways how are these directories/files created

  1. Locus feature - Geoaching offlinizer
  2. old version of Geocaching4Locus add-on, in case you have in it's settings enabled "Create image tab"

few explanations:

  • new version of G4L add-on do not do these files, because all is send directly to Locus
  • current system is created in a way, how older app called "SpoilerSync" works (and few others). They do such hierarchy of directories/files and I keep in Locus same system.

What I suggest is to use function in menu > settings > misc > clear temporary data > Unneeded geocaching data. This remove all folders that are not anymore need (cache is not anymore in Locus)

Anyway when you delete it, you just lost tab "Images" in point screen (when you tap on cache). Nothing more. So I think it's not a problem to just delete them.

Feel free to ask additional question, I'll gladly answer.

Hi,

this folders contain photos of geocache listings.

Do you know Menue/Miscelllaneous/Clear temporary data/Unused attachements ?

With this option you are able to clean the folders from unneeded photos. Maybe it speed up your process

EDIT: menion was faster

A little bit :). Balloni, just count that "Usused attachments" remove really unused attachments to points - but these are data usually visible in points screen > attachments tab.

In this case, it's a photos/images for geocaches, which are visible in "Images" or "Spoilers" tab and should be really removed by "Unneeded geocaching data" settings.

Well, I deleted the entire folder mayhem and then updated all my caches, so now there is no folder mess and I still have pictures in listings and the picture tab in point screens including spolers. Thank you, guys!
