Geocaching translation

About one and a half months I'm going a trip to Krakow, and will finde some geocaches there.

But many of the caches are neither written in Norwegian or English, so it's a little hard to understand what they are all about.

Is it possible to create a "translation button" in Locus, so text that comes in "listning", "hints" etc is translated, for example via google translate?

Hi,

install Google translate. Long press on the listing and mark the text area to translate. Then click the three dots near "copy, share,..." and choose translate. That's it :)

Don't forget to download your target language offline ;)

Hello Fred,

ah this is very good point Wolfgang, thank you!

It is correctly ... Google Translate offer offline packs for most of world languages so it is possible to carry in device offline translations for your data. Since Android 7, translation is even an easier because it's offered directly as overlay button upon selection.

Menion, you're welcome. That what I have described works on Android 6 & 7.

Thank you! It works good that way.

I do not concern myself :-)

As I wrote above, the method Wolfgang describes will work. But I see that it is placed a translation button on the hint, and if you tap one of the logs.

Why isn't it a good idea to have such a button in the menu for the listning too? That would have been a little easier way to translate, I think.

I remember I tried something like this an year ago and it is technically not possible. Good translate web service refused some longer texts to translate over direct http request. Not sure if this is still a problem.

There is also a technical difference (at least for me :) ), that in logs is not possible to select part of text compare to listing.

OK, I understand. By the esy, have you tried to use POST-method?

It seems that it works with texts up to 5000 characters.

Hello Fred, Locus Map currently does not use "Google Translation API", but direct display of google translation web page where text to translate is directly in "Url". So it's limited by maximum allowed length of GET request that Google is able to handle. POST method over API should help here of course, on second side it should bring need for paid access. I still think that it not worth it mainly because existing Google Translation native application.

Alternative solution should be some better cooperation with this "Google Translate" application. Unfortunately there does not exists any official method how to communicate with this app, so another problem.

Thanks for understanding.

The hint and maybe a few logs can also be translated with the Google translate app. You just have to make a screenshot and translate this one. It's not comfortable but it's possible.

(I'm not against a translate feature. I just want to help to find a quick working solution)

So often you do not need it and then you can take google. I'm not against it, but there are more important functions to implement.
