Screen control with wave gesture not working on Samsung S10

Well, the title says it all... Tried the gesture control

on my Galaxy S10, but no amount of waving gets a response. Ideas?

Hi,

our colleague who owns S10 has recently tested it and you're partly right - waving doesn't work, the S10 proximity sensor is somehow not sensitive enough for the gesture. BUT it works when you cover the sensor with your hand for a sec. Not just wave but cover it.

Michal, thanks for the quick reply! I tried it and it is as you say, if you touch the screen it works. However tapping the screen triggers a whole bunch of unwanted actions so it is actually unusable. So bottom line is the S10 proximity sensor does not work.

Also tried it with an S7 (which I intend for biking): Proximity sensor works!

Maybe as an addition: I'd like to use Locus Map as map display for biking and the battery simply does not last a day. So I thought the proximity sensor could be a way to switch the screen on/off while biking (in order to save power). Using the touchscreen while riding does not work - there's simply no way to control your finger movement precise enough. Any idea for bike compatibel power saving tricks?

Thanks! Martin

Martin, I use the screen control together with navigation - the display goes on automatically when a turn is coming. And, of course the proximity sensor controlled turning on/off too. My phone has 4000 mAh capacity so one day performance is not a problem for me.

The S10 is too expensive to mount on a handlebar... I'll use my elderly S7 and this seems to use approx. 20% battery/h with screen on. But I guess proximity sensor and navigation controlled on/off will help. I am wondering how much track recording alone and running LM with screen off will drain the battery; I'll have to try that. Thanks!

S10

1. Your proximity sensor is free ? Not covered by screen protector ?

2. The sensor trx infrared led is on ? Test: https://youtu.be/u6pAVYo5RUg

2. Touch the screen ? Locate and touch sensor only, use as toggle on/off button.

1. My S10 shipped with a screen protector from factory, it's still on there. But it is the official one so I guess this will have no influence.

2. I'll have to check.

2. Doesn't work. You have to use the whole hand.

If you google "s10 proximity sensor problems", you'll find many reports on that. Seems to be a general S10 problem.

Anyway I'll use my S7 for biking (where the sensor works), so this will maybe become a problem in a couple of years when my now-new S10 becomes the "new" secondary phone.

Hi Martin.

Seems indeed this sensor is not available for ext apps, except Whatsapp ?

https://www.reddit.com/r/galaxys10/comments/d94ob7/proximity_sensor_on_s10s10s10e/

In that tread the functionality is even described as a "Palm Proximity Sensor". Crazy !

So better avoid the S10 ? Tanks anyway for msg and specific hardware report.

If the proximity sensor is important to you, then the S10 clearly is not the top choice. I like it though, great phone with good price/performance now. Waterproof!
