gpx import is extremely slow

Import of 3MB gpx file with 1500 POIs takes about 20-30 seconds on a fairly current Snapdragon 615 based phone. Parsing and indexing of one waypoint certainly should not take 15 milliseconds, even a lousy parser with quadtree backend written in a high-level scripting language as LUA is at least 10 times faster. Please fix.

do you have enabled "Check for duplicates" in Settings > Misc? Try to disable it if you think, that parsing is too slow and if you do not care about duplicate points.

Disabling the duplicate check didn't make a noticeable difference. Now I think the main problem is probably UI, because the POI counter seems to be updated continuously.

Hmm may you share your file, so I can test exactly same source as you?
Anyway from my point of view, 15 ms on single point is good enough, so I cannot promise improvements.
