Heart Rate tracking improvements ( zones )

I would like to propose some features that would add a lot of useful information for tracking your fitness data.

1. Workout Intensity (=Percentage of Heart Rate Reserve %HRR)

The intensity of a workout can be calculated by comparing your current heart rate to your heart rate reserve (HRR). To get one's %HRR you need to know HRrest and HRmax. So 2 further attributes in the personal information section would be necessary. The formula is simple: %HRR = (HRcurrent - HRrest) / (HRmax - HRrest)

See: http://fellrnr.com/wiki/Heart_Rate_Reserve

2. Training Zones

Based on the %HRR I'd love to see training zones based on the Karvonen method. Here's a list of those zones:

  • Zone 6: Speed (anaerobic) = 90-110 %HRR
  • Zone 5: Economy (anaerobic) = 80-90 %HRR
  • Zone 4: Stamina (aerobic) = 70-80 %HRR
  • Zone 3: Endurance (aerobic) = 60-70 %HRR
  • Zone 2: Recovery (aerobic) = 50-60 %HRR
  • Zone 1: Resting = 30-50 %HRR

This allows you to see roughly how intense you're training currently and if you're working out in aerobic or anaerobic state. This has been incorporated in Stravistix (a Chrome extension to make Strava even more useful). See: https://thomaschampagne.github.io/stravistix/img/screens/activity_xtd_hr_speed.jpg

3. Dashboard Element

Adding a %HRR dashboard element with a zone indicator (Zone 1 to 6 or color based) would just be awesome.

acoustic warning when exceeding specific heart rate zone would be great feature!

It would be perfect...just used dashboard for my mtb training.hr, cdc alarms would be awesome!

I have written a very simple heart rate alert for my personal use: it can give three different signals for three zones. @aitvariux: If you are interested I can send it to you.

benuli, you are a small genius !! )))) yes, please. aitvariux@yahoo.co.uk really appreciate that!

@aitvariux: ok you become the second installation of this add on world wide ;-). At the moment I run the 'developer version' of my add on. I must learn how to deploy it as a real app. So if you have some patience on testing, we will get it to run. Next days you hear from me.

No problem !! i am not a techy guy too much, but will see how i can help for you with this !

Hi. I'm intersted too. Can you please send it to me too? Thanks a lot.

That looks perfect and simple. Where to download ?

just one more idea. maybe it could vibrate not only beep ? Mate, if you want to test it, i will go to do a cardio training today and gonna wear my bluetooth belt.

Yes,it works! I think need more frequently beeps when hr is high or somehow have to possibility to change that beeps

Not working on moto g 1st gen.

Good day Andreas, guys,

I've merged older topic focused on "heart rate zones" into this new idea proposed by Andrew.

Thanks Andrew for a very precise description, I'll definitely use it as good inspiration. This idea has quite a big support, so I'm sure, I'll work on this, not so far since now :). Thanks for now.

Thanks Menion! Looking forward to see Locus becoming even more useful to me. It started with being a simple hiking app with offline maps for me. Now I use it for tracking my photo spots and since yesterday for tracking my rides and runs. You guys rock!

It would be nice to allow users to create their own zones.

It would be nice to setup interval training in zone alerts. Interval training is not in one zone. Training is splitted to periods and you train in different zone in different period (typically you switch between short intensive anaerobic and longer aerobic periods).

There is a Locus Addon "Heart rate zone" which does a very good job. Only a dashboard element is missing :-) . And of course it does not work anymore with the yesterday new installed Locus version 3.24.2. :-(

That looks good for monitoring transitions of zones. Nevertheless visually monitoring the current heart rate zone would be a lot more useful. But thanks for the tip, didn't know about this addon yet.

Yes,you are right. A more visual monitoring sounds good. And I feel better with bultin functionality. This should avoid problems with updates.

hi, does it work with the very last update? Maybe it's the same problem as with this topic: http://forum.locusmap.eu/index.php?topic=5096.45.

Pebble didn't show any values from Locus anymore. It uses the same Locus service.

Heart rate zone v1.0.7 on Locus Map Pro 3.24.3 works fine now. (sorry for my delayed answer)

Point 3 (about Dashboard) is similar to my idea

Point 2: addon doesn't work after each update of Locus. :(

Hi Menion,

can be improved the statistic of the recorded track?

Specifically, the time spent in different heart rate zones. I will set my zones (see first post) and Locus shows me how long i was in Z1, Z2, Z3 ...

I still like to recommend trying out Runalyze.com!

photo

Yes, it's option too, but still it's better to have it in Locus. One app for all

Hm, still Locus is an outdoor app, so bloating it with fitness stuff (indoor training, etc), although there already are great specialized apps for that, seems too much in my opinion.

Recording, tracking and orientation/navigation, ok, but does Locus really needs evaluation of trainings, when there are more dedicated and nicely working solutions already?

Heart Rate Zones aren't just for indoor training. I know people who use them to monitor their performance while hiking.

Heart Rate Zones simply categorize data (Heart Rate) that Locus already records.

Locus Map is more than just an "outdoor app". It currently records heart rate and reports laps and calories consumed. Those features have nothing to do with "orientation/navigation" but have been requested by the user community. Cyclists have also requested that Locus Map support power meters.

👍

We need to show informations which Locus recorded

photo

Even though I use Locus as adventure and training app I also want to know how demanding my adventures where,

And as a Bikepacker running multiple apps at the same time is not an option hence Battery Life.

Secondly no app beats locus IMHO in case of adventure features and customasation.

so yes we need a reaseonable slim integration of fitness festures someday.

cheers. Jan

Checkout runalyze! Easy and even also automatic export possible from locus. A fork is a fork and a knife is a knife, don't you use both for eating?

Feature: Dashboard: Color Numbers by heart rate Zone option.

photo

It would be nice a "max heart rate alarm" function. If my heart rate would be higher than the preset value, Locus should alarm with a loud beep.

photo
1

Have you tried Locus addon heart rate zone? Set to one's individual zones with voice notification. Perfect, as it informs about zone changes during exercise!

photo
photo

I strongly agree with the opinion

And it would be nice to have a beep about your maximum heart rate for your age.

photo

And this should go along with a rolling 3-minute average of the heart rate/zone. A total average is not useful in this scenario.
